The Khasi Students Union[a] (KSU) is a political organisation in Meghalaya, India.
History/Activities
[edit]The Khasi Students Union was formed in 1978.[3] It was modeled after the All Assam Students Union.[4] Along with the Garo Students Union, the KSU in 1979 led an agitation, involving picketing, courting of arrest, and satyagraha, demanding that the names of foreigners be deleted from Meghalaya's voters lists.[5]
The KSU led an anti-foreigner agitation targeting Nepalis[6] that resulted in the expulsion of about 5,000[7] to 10,000 Nepalis from Meghalaya from 1986 to 1987.[8] By December 1987, over 4,000 Nepalis were staying in relief camps. The KSU demanded that the camps be closed since their "unhygienic conditions" could be harmful to the health of those not in them and also that the refugees be moved to Barapani from Shillong.[9] The Union initially raised nine demands to the government: expel "foreigners" from Meghalaya, implement inner line regulations in the state, reserve all 60 state assembly seats and 95% of government jobs for tribals, create employment opportunities, delete names of foreigners from electoral rolls, withdraw criminal cases registered against agitationists, institute a judicial inquiry into the police firing in June, and remove the Central Reserve Police Force from Meghalaya.[9]
The organisation prohibited girls from wearing Salwar Kameezes during the 1980s and 1990s,[10] so that Khasi culture would be upheld by women's clothing.[11]
The KSU, in 1996, filed a public interest litigation in the Guwahati High Court that proposed a ten-year ban on the trade of timber and the closure of saw and veneer mills to protect Meghalaya's forest.[12]
In 2014, the KSU demanded the renaming of the Ri-Bhoi district to the "North Khasi hills", claiming that the term 'Bhoi' is derogatory.[13]
Views
[edit]One of the major demands of the KSU is the implementation of Inner Line regulations in Meghalaya.[14]
The KSU opposes the mining of uranium in the state.[2][15][16]
While Khasi society is traditionally matrilineal, the KSU has advocated for the abolition of matriliny and its replacement with patriliny in Khasi society.[17] The Union believes that the child born of a Khasi father and non-Khasi mother is a Khasi, but a child of the inverse is not.[18]
The KSU holds that the Marngar people should not be recognised as Khasi.[19]
