Ken Anderson is an American hair restoration surgeon known for performing the first “megasession” follicular unit extraction (FUE) hair transplant procedure published in the medical literature in 2004.[1] He is a triple board-certified surgeon in hair restoration surgery, facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, and otolaryngology-head & neck surgery.[2]

Anderson is the founder and medical director of the Anderson Center for Hair in Atlanta, Georgia, and holds clinical faculty positions at Emory University School of Medicine and the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. [3]

Early life and education

[edit]

Anderson earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Pennsylvania State University in 1991 and graduated with honors from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 1996.[4]

Between 1996 and 1997 Anderson completed a general surgery internship followed by a residency in otolaryngology–head and neck surgery at the University of Michigan in 2002.[5]

Anderson went on to complete a fellowship in Facial plastic and reconstructive surgery at the University of Michigan in 2003.[6]

Medical illustration

[edit]

During his residency, Anderson worked as a professional medical illustrator, producing pen-and-ink illustrations for peer-reviewed journals and textbooks.[7] His work appears in surgical atlases and clinical publications.

Career

[edit]

In 2003, Anderson joined the [[New Hair Institute in Beverly Hills, California, where he performed over 800 procedures related to hair restoration.[1] While there, he carried out the first full Follicular unit extraction session, harvesting 1,901 grafts in one procedure and publishing the results in the medical literature.[1]

In 2008, Anderson was recruited to Emory University School of Medicine to develop and lead a new hair restoration program within the Department of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.[8] He later became an Adjunct Clinical Professor of Dermatology at Emory, where he continues to teach hair restoration surgery.[9]

In 2012, Anderson founded the Anderson Center for Hair in Atlanta, establishing the Southeast’s first purpose-built clinics dedicated to hair transplant surgery.[10]

In 2010, he also founded the American Academy of Hair Restoration Surgery, through which he has trained over 60 physicians worldwide.[11]

Contributions to hair restoration

[edit]

Anderson’s 2004 report was the first in the medical literature to document a full mega session of FUE, and has been cited as a landmark in the evolution of the procedure.[12] He has also served as a clinical mentor for the ARTAS robotic hair transplant system.[13]

Awards

[edit]

Anderson has received numerous awards. He has been named a Castle Connolly Top Doctor for 11 consecutive years,[14] selected annually for Atlanta (magazine) “Top Doctors” list.[15]

In 2024, he won the international award for “Best Hair Restoration Surgery Clinical Case” at the Aesthetic and Anti-Aging Medicine World Congress in Monaco[16] and was honored with a lifetime achievement award by the Society of Hair Transplant Surgery in India.[17]

Notable patients

[edit]

In August 2025, professional wrestler and actor John Cena revealed that Anderson had performed his hair transplant surgery. Cena publicly credited him as “not only an amazing surgeon, he’s a great friend and changed my life!!” in a social media post on X (formerly Twitter).[18] The disclosure was also covered in People (magazine). [19]

An article in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on 8 September 2025 also reported that Anderson was John Cena’s hair transplant surgeon.[20]
