Kate Moore is a British author and editor. She is best known for her historical non-fiction works, particularly The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America's Shining Women (2017) and The Woman They Could Not Silence (2021). Her works focus on forgotten women in history whose courage sparked lasting social change.
Career
[edit]Moore began her career in book publishing, working as a non-fiction editor for twelve years. She rose to become an editorial director at Penguin Random House UK before leaving her full-time position on 4 July 4 2014 to become a freelance editor, author, and ghostwriter.[1]
Moore discovered the story of the Radium Girls while directing a play called These Shining Lives by Melanie Marnich, which dramatized the Ottawa dial-painters' experiences. Through her research, she realised no book existed that told the story from the women's perspective, which inspired her to write her breakthrough historical work.[2] The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America's Shining Women (2017) became Moore's breakthrough work, telling the story of American women who were poisoned by radium paint while working in watch dial factories during World War I and the 1920s, and their subsequent fight for justice. The Radium Girls won the 2017 Goodreads Choice Award for Best History, was voted U.S. librarians' favorite non-fiction book of 2017, and became a New York Times, USA Today, and Wall Street Journal bestseller.[3][4] The book was also named a Notable Nonfiction Book of 2018 by the American Library Association.
The Woman They Could Not Silence (2021) tells the story of Elizabeth Packard, a 19th-century woman who was wrongfully institutionalized by her husband and subsequently fought for women's rights and mental health reform. The book became a USA Today bestseller, was runner-up for Best History in the 2021 Goodreads Choice Awards, and was named a 2021 Booklist Editor's Choice.[5]
Felix the Railway Cat (2017) and Full Steam Ahead, Felix! (2018) are non-fiction books about Felix, a cat who became the Senior Pest Controller at Huddersfield Train Station in Yorkshire and gained international fame through social media. Both books became Sunday Times bestsellers.[6]
Writing style and themes
[edit]Moore's historical works are characterized by narrative non-fiction techniques that bring forgotten women's stories to life. She has stated that her passion as a writer is "to help people to have a voice, especially those silenced through injustice."[7] Her books typically focus on women who fought against powerful institutions and sparked lasting social change.
