The Jean-Pictet Competition is an international moot court competition about international humanitarian law. It is supported by the International Committee of the Red Cross and has been organised since 1989.[1][2] It is considered one of the most prestigious humanitarian law moot competitions worldwide.[3][4][5] Over 350 universities have participated to date from over 100 countries,[6] with more than 50 teams participating annually.
The Competition is named after Jean Pictet, a Swiss jurist who worked in international humanitarian law and contributed to drafting the Geneva Conventions.
Competition Format
[edit]The competition is not a traditional moot court competition where teams only prepare submissions before a panel of judges. Instead, participants are assigned various professional roles (e.g., military officers, humanitarian workers, diplomats, or government lawyers) and are assessed on their ability to use the law in strategic scenarios. Some other assessment factors are:[7]
- Knowledge of IHL and public international law.
- Understanding the complexities of the simulations and their assigned roles.
- Teamwork and collaboration.
- Oral communication and argumentation skills.
Teams which excel in the preliminary rounds advance to the semi-finals, and then the finals.
Starting from 2019, the competition began hosting multiple editions per year. The 2026 edition of the competition will be held in Dilidjan, Armenia, Batam, Indonesia, and Singapore.
The Jean-Pictet Prize is awarded to the overall winner of the competition each edition, while the Gilbert-Apollis Prize is awarded to the best speaker(s) in the preliminary rounds.[7]
The University of New South Wales holds the most competition wins at 6, followed by the Free University of Brussels at 5 wins.
