Jaremi Aleksander Picz (born 26 February 1955 in Lewin Brzeski, Poland) is a Polish painter, sculptor, and graphic artist. He was awarded the title of "Meritorious for Polish Culture" by the Polish Ministry of Culture and was nominated in 2018 for the International Prize Caravaggio – Grand Master of Art in Milan.[1]

Biography

[edit]

From 1981 to 1982, Jaremi Picz lived in Germany, where he collaborated with the gallery of Wacław Suchecki in Düsseldorf. In 1988, he designed the entrance doors of the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, a Neo-Gothic church in Lugnian. During the Oder flood of 1997, all of Picz’s works created up to that point were destroyed.

Picz has participated in numerous open-air art projects and cultural events. He worked with the ART Barbakan group in Warsaw and with an artist collective associated with the Industrial and Trade Congregation in Warsaw.[2]

Artistic style

A painting from the Epicentrum cycle by Jaremi Picz

The cycle Epicentrum is a major body of work by Jaremi Picz, reflecting his artistic development over the years. Originally inspired by the chaos of cosmic disorder, symbolized by the supernova, Picz gradually transitioned towards structured, geometric forms. This transformation is visible in the complex interplay of colors and shapes, evoking both harmonious implosions and dynamic explosions.

In this cycle, Picz employs geometric forms such as circles and rings to visualize the tension between order and chaos. His compositions often expand outward from a central point, engaging viewers visually and emotionally.

Picz draws inspiration from Op art and from artists such as Victor Vasarely and Bridget Riley, as well as from the philosophical approaches of Kazimir Malevich and the techniques of Jackson Pollock.

These influences allow him to challenge perception, often integrating natural phenomena and scientific concepts such as Max Planck’s quantum theory.

His approach reflects a dualism manifested through the use of both visible and ultraviolet light, emphasizing the relationship between the seen and unseen properties of nature, and exploring the complex interplay of energy and matter. The use of the term “Quantinum” in some of his titles further underscores the connection between his art and universal scientific principles, highlighting Picz’s ambition to use art as a medium for philosophical exploration.[3]
