Early life

[edit]

Born in East Greenbush, New York, Murtagh began his hockey career with the NY Dynamo 13U AAA team before eventually making his way to the Bishop Kearney Selects AAA program.[1] By the 2023-24 season, Murtagh joined the USA Hockey National Team Development Program on their U-17 team before progressing to their U-18 team.

Murtagh played junior hockey for the U.S. NTDP U-18 team, where he tallied 53 points (22 goals, 31 assists) in 56 games during the 2024-25 season.[2] He led the team in power-play goals, with NHL scouts remarking at his incredible shot speed and accuracy. [2]

College

Murtagh joined Boston University for the 2025-26 season. Listed at 6 ft 1 in and 198 lb, he's played the majority of his minutes at forward.[3]

NHL draft

[edit]

At the 2025 NHL Entry Draft, Murtagh was selected 40th overall by the Philadelphia Flyers.[1] Scouting reports described him as a "pure goal scorer" with a quick release and a strong offensive drive.[2] A Neutral Zone hockey report highlighted many of his abilities as strengths, such as skating, puck control, and offensive instincts, while identifying physical play and defensive reads as areas for growth. Murtagh will look to begin his NHL career with the Flyers upon completing his tenure at Boston University. [4]

Player profile

[edit]

Murtagh is a primary left-handed shot at the center position. He's a primary center who can play left wing if needed, though most of his minutes come at center. He is recognized for his wicked-fast shot, quick release, and ability to create scoring chances off the rush.[2] Scouts note his competitiveness and hockey sense as key strengths, with ongoing development focused on consistency and physicality.[4] Murtagh is categorized as a heavy shooter, powerful skater, and a workhorse by Elite Prospects.[1]
