Comment: Is the term better written ⟨ITE⟩ or ⟨Ite⟩? (For now, I'll use the former.)Is the term "ITE" used in any language other than Finnish, or is it merely a/the Finnish term for something that in English already has an established name? The Finnish-language article ITE-taide (via Google Translate, which of course is not so trustworthy) makes its subject sound like art brut. That's covered in the article Outsider art. Can't "ITE art" similarly redirect to Outsider art?Satu Itkonen: ITE art - Everyday creativity. Maan henki 2005
is formatted as if it's a book. And sure enough, Worldcat shows that Satu Itkonen has published several books. But Worldcat doesn't list one that's titled ITE Art.According to OCLC 644522687, Haveri's thesis (ISBN 978-952-5870-14-5) is titled not Contemporary folk art but instead Nykykansantaide. -- Hoary (talk) 07:13, 17 October 2025 (UTC)
ITE art is contemporary folk art, which differs from folk art by breaking away from the collective nature and traditionbonding of traditional folk art. ITE art replaces them with individual artism and original creativity. While traditional folk art represents aesthetically high-quality crafts, ITE art is a folk visual art based on dexterity and ingenuity.[1]
The name ITE comes from the name ites tehty elämä given by Veli Granö to his project to map Finnish outsider art in 1999. The abbreviation ITE was coined by cultural producer Raija Kallionen.[2]
Characteristics of the works
[edit]ITE art works can be sculptures, paintings, drawings, objects of use, self-invented instruments, gardens, architecture, inventions or decorated devices.[3] ITE art is characterized by the construction of work environments. Work environments can consist of sculptures, fantasy architecture or other aestheticization of the environment. The works are usually site-specific, meaning they are built and designed for a specific environment, where they form groups of works and thematic entities.[4]
