Irina Gabiani (born 1971, Tbilisi, Georgia)[1][2] is an artist. Born and raised in Georgia, under Soviet occupation since 1921, she spent her childhood in an environment where creativity was often silenced. This ignited in her a deep longing for freedom, which became the foundation of her artistic journey and continues to guide her towards a practice that transcends imposed boundaries.[3]
Later, while living in Georgia in the 1990s, she experienced the war firsthand, when Russian aggression targeted the country’s sovereignty and violent conflict erupted in the heart of Tbilisi. These formative experiences deeply marked her artistic path, anchoring her pursuit of freedom and her exploration of humanity as one interconnected organism. Gabiani believes that if humankind ever comes to fully realize this interconnectedness, the very premise of war would lose its meaning.[4][5][6]
Biography
[edit]Gabiani studied at Nikoladze Art College and the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts (1986–1994) and later at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy of Art in Amsterdam (1994–1997). She lives and works in Luxembourg.[7][8]
Artistic practice
[edit]Gabiani works across multiple disciplines including painting, drawing, collage, installation, video art and performance.[9] Her work explores structures that connect individuals with the broader universe. She developed a personal concept called "Minimal-Complexity," highlighting complexity within simple forms, geometric patterns and subtle lines.[10] She frequently incorporates collage from contemporary magazines and extends motifs with hand-drawn elements.[11][12]
