Draft:Interagency Institute

The InterAgency Institute (IA) is a digital think tank established in December 2020 by expatriate and Global South women as a collective of researchers. The Institute is dedicated to advancing human security, focusing on two primary dimensions: local development and global security, with particular emphasis on Portuguese- and Spanish-speaking countries.

History and Mission

The Institute was created as a collaborative platform for applied research, policy advocacy, and interagency dialogue. Its mission is to bridge local and global perspectives by promoting knowledge circulation, cooperation, transparency, and inclusive access to resources and institutions.

Programs and Activities

The InterAgency Institute develops projects and initiatives that combine research, monitoring, policy analysis, and capacity-building. Activities include:

Research on human security issues such as human trafficking, organized crime, firearms trafficking, cybercrime, and inter-agency cooperation.

Policy briefs addressing global debates and local policy frameworks.

Participation in international conferences and UN processes on crime prevention, human rights, and emerging technologies.

Simulations and training exercises designed to support inter-agency learning and cooperation.

Strategic partnerships with universities, NGOs, and public institutions in Portuguese- and Spanish-speaking countries.

Alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The work of the InterAgency Institute explicitly aligns with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Its two central dimensions relate to different clusters of SDGs:

Global Security

Linked to goals that emphasize governance, equality, and innovation: SDG 16 – Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals SDG 10 – Reduced Inequalities SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure

Local Development

Connected to goals addressing social, economic, and environmental sustainability: SDG 1 – No Poverty SDG 2 – Zero Hunger SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being SDG 4 – Quality Education SDG 5 – Gender Equality SDG 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation SDG 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production SDG 15 – Life on Land

The Institute connects local initiatives with global security concerns, reinforcing the interdependence of development and governance.
