Ibom Hall is a government building located in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. The name identifies the building as the community town hall of all the citizens of Akwa Ibom State set apart from their ethnic town halls and squares.

The hall is also an event centre. It has played host to many social, business, political, religious and cultural events. The events include the Akwa Ibom Christmas Carols Festival[1][2][3] and theatrical performances[4] [5][6][7], pageants[8]

History

The Hall was conceived by the Colonel Godwin Abbe [9]-led military administration [10] It was designed by Esoetuk Ikpong Ikpong Etteh[11], principal partner of Pacs Associate, a Port Harcourt-based architectural firm.

The Hall is located along the IBB Avenue, a road named for the Nigerian military president Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida who created Akwa Ibom State from the former Cross River State territory on September 23, 1987.

Architecture

The architecture of the Ibom Hall embodies a unique expression of architectural nuances peculiar to historicist Postmodern architecture. The building form is fragmented into different shapes joined together to make the whole.

The ornamentation on the building contains depictions that are believed to be the cultural practices of the Akwa Ibom people

The major features of the building are constructed in concrete, shaped to resemble different forms. The entrance has concrete umbrella-like structures over the canopy area. The hipped, gabled, and flat roofs over the other spaces are all made of concrete supported on waffle grid beam structures.

Building Orientation

The longitudinal axis of the building is oriented along an almost southeast-northwest direction, while the main entrance to the site and building is from the northeast of the plot through the Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida Avenue.

There is a signage with the name of the hall outside the perimeter of the hall

Building Form

The building form is an aggregate of different shapes.

The entrance canopy starts as a rectangular slab with four umbrella-like concrete structures marking its corner points. This structure connects to the building in a half-hexagon extending from the rectangular slab to form the roof over the entrance lobby.

This hexagonal entrance lobby connects to a rectangular space interrupted by a semi-circular recess on which is formed the amphitheater located on the northwestern exterior of the building. The lobby is roofed with a flat concrete slab.

The main hall is an octagon-shaped volume rising two floors. It is capped by a hexagonal hipped roof realized with reinforced concrete. It is bounded on the northeastern face by a colonnade that rises for one level to terminate at a slab decorated with ornamentation on the northwestern face. This colonnade leads to the stage's private entrance.

The stage is housed in a cubiform building joined to the hall by a party wall. It rises for two volumes to be capped by a pyramidal hipped roof having a steeply sloped face on the northeastern end.

The columns on the northeastern colonnade connecting the entrance canopy to the stage's private entrance are cylindrical reinforced concrete columns with outer concrete skins that taper from their top towards the ground. The tapering begins about 100 mm below the supported slab and terminates about 100-150 mm above the floor below. The first floor of the hall has rectangular fins separating the aluminium profile-framed glass windows

Materials and Methods

All of the building's construction is done by using masonry or concrete to produce the sculptural shapes of the building

The roof of the main hall is supported by waffle-grid beams on the inside of the building.

The windows are made of glass and aluminum framing.

The columns are made of reinforced concrete

The entrance canopy's rectangular form features rectangular reinforced concrete beams. The beams inside the umbrella-like form elevated above the canopy slab take a cross shape.

Ornamentation

The building features ornamentation depicting different images and activities. The sides of the slab around the entrance canopy and the northeastern colonnade walkway are decorated with different ornamental motifs.

The fence of the building also features different sculptural depictions of the lifestyles and cultural practices common to the indigenous peoples of the state. [12][13]
