Howard Ong (born 8 March 1966) is an Australian politician. Ong was born in Singapore and and served his national service as an army lieutenant. He moved to Australia with his wife more than 20 years ago and they have been actively serving their community. Ong runs an IT consulting practice and was the Liberal Party's candidate in in Tangney in the 2025 federal election.

Education
[edit]Ong attended Raffles Institution in Singapore before graduating from Curtin University.[1][2][3] in 1991 with a Bachelor of Business (Honours) degree.
Career

[edit]Ong started his career as an IT consultant[4] in Singapore’s Ministry of Health. He later joined Oracle Corporation, before moving to Australia in 1996 and starting his IT consulting practice[1][2][3][5][6].
Political Career
[edit]Ong contested as a candidate in Tangney in the 2025 federal election[2][3][7] for the Liberal Party of Australia, gaining 43.0% of the Two-Party Preferred votes[8].
Community Advocacy
[edit]Ong and his wife Hilda have been actively serving their community for more than 20 years[5][6].
Ong is a regular participant and Ambassador for the St Vincent de Paul Society (Vinnies) CEO Sleepout[9][10][11], an annual event to raise funds and awareness for homelessness.
Personal Life
[edit]Ong grew up in Singapore and served his national service as an army lieutenant[6]. Ong and his wife Hilda live in the southern suburbs of Perth. They have a daughter.
Ong’s father, Ong Lian Teng, was a Singapore politician[3][4] who served as the Member of the Legislative Assembly for Bukit Panjang for Barisan Socialis Party between 1963 and 1965 and later MP between 1965 and 1966[6].
Ong’s younger brother, Ong Ye Kung[2][6], is Singapore’s Minister of Health; and the Member of Parliament representing the Sembawang Central division of Sembawang Group Representation Constituency since 2015[3]
Ong’s maternal cousin, Xie Yao Quan, is also a Singaporean Member of Parliament, representing Jurong Central.[12]
