Horatio Sprague Eustis (December 25, 1811 – September 4, 1858) was an American planter and lawyer in 19th century Mississippi and Louisiana. He was born in Newport Rhode Island but moved to Natchez District, Mississippi Territory after graduating from Harvard in 1830.[1] In addition to practicing law, he was hired by Major Henri Chotard as a tutor for his daughter Catherine. They would susequently marry in Natchez on May 10 1838.[2] As part of her dowry, Henry Chotard had given the newlyweds 22.5 acres of his ajoining Summerset plantation and on this property Mr Eustis would build his wife a Greek revival urban villa which was called "Oakland".[3]< The house was completed 1840 and over the next eighteen years the family would add ten children.[4] His law business prospered and he additionally became a successful planter with properties in Mississippi and Louisiana. After a short illness he would die at his plantation "Eustatia"[5] in Issaquena Mississippi on September 4,1858. He was 46 years old. He is buried in Natchez City Cemetery[6], Natchez, Adams county, Mississippi.
