Draft:Hinrich Foundation

The Hinrich Foundation is a philanthropic organization based in Asia. It focuses on "advancing mutually beneficial and sustainable" global trade through research and education programs.[1] It was established in 2012 by Merle A. Hinrich, founder and former Executive Chairman of Global Sources.[2] Since 2021, its programs have been managed in Singapore through Hinrich Foundation Limited, a registered charity in Singapore.[3]

Publications

[edit]

To date, the Hinrich Foundation has published over 1,000 research products, focused on 10 areas of global trade: sustainable trade, trade and geopolitics, digital trade, US-China trade, the World Trade Organization, trade policy, trade distortion and protectionism, trade and technology, foreign direct investment, and free trade agreements.[4]

The Hinrich Foundation's flagship publication is the Hinrich Foundation Sustainable Trade Index (STI). Launched in 2016 in partnership with the Economist Intelligence Unit, the index was intended as a tool to help governments and companies build resilience into their economies and business operations.[5] Since 2022, the Hinrich Foundation commissioned the IMD World Competitiveness Center to produce and release the STI's fourth and subsequent annual editions.[6]

Education program

[edit]

The Hinrich Foundation has offered scholarships for postgraduate courses on business management and global affairs, including at the University of Auckland[7], Nanyang Technological University[8], Hong Kong Baptist University[9], Georgetown University[10], and INSEAD[11].

In 2022, the Hinrich Foundation partnered with Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) to introduce the QS International Trade Rankings.[12]

Journalist training

[edit]

Since 2019, the Hinrich Foundation has partnered with the US-based National Press Foundation to provide both in-person and online training sessions on global trade for journalists.[13] The two foundations co-established the Hinrich Foundation Award for Distinguished Reporting on Trade, which carries a US$10,000 prize.[14] Past winners include reporting teams from Bloomberg News[15], Nikkei Asia[16], The Wall Street Journal[17], The Washington Post[18], and Associated Press[19].

In 2022, the Hinrich Foundation expanded its collaboration with media associations by partnering with the Association of Foreign Press Correspondents-USA to organize on ongoing series of podcasts and virtual educational programs.[20]

Awards

[edit]

In 2024, the Hinrich Foundation received The Gold Standard Awards for Corporate Citizenship (Philanthropy). The award was conferred by the Public Relations & Communications Association Asia Pacific.[21]
