Arus,[a] alternatively known as Auster in western regions and often colloquially named as the Hero,[b] is a character created by Japanese game designer Yuji Horii. A notable character from the Japanese entertainment company Square Enix, he is the main protagonist and one of the playable characters from the role-playing video game Dragon Quest VII, the seventh mainline installment in the Dragon Quest franchise originally released for the PlayStation in 2000. In the game, Arus is the 17-year old son of a fishing family living in the port town of Pilchard Bay who goes on an impromptu adventure when his father comes back from a fishing trip with a piece of a world map. He is kind and naive, which gives him the habit of being unable to refuse requests from others. He wears a green tunic and pointy hat and is often accompanied by his friends Mirabel and Prince Eric or by other supporting characters in his traveling party.

Although initially conceptualized by Horii, Arus’s design was created by mangaka Akira Toriyama, who had created every Dragon Quest character and monsters look up to that point in close partnership with Horii.
