Gibson App (marketed as Gibson: Learn & Play Guitar) is a mobile guitar-learning platform developed by the Swedish music-technology company Zoundio AB in collaboration with Gibson Brands. It was released in 2021 for iOS and Android devices.

Features

[edit]

The Gibson App includes several features for learning to play guitar. These include:[1]

  • Interactive lessons – Step-by-step lessons for beginners. The app listens while the user plays and indicates whether the notes and chords are correct.
  • Famous songs – licensed song tutorials with interactive tablature, video walkthroughs, and multiple skill-level versions.
  • Genre and style guides – dedicated lessons covering styles such as rock, blues, country, and metal, including artist-inspired techniques.
  • Personalized AI feedback (iOS only) – identifies strengths and suggests areas for improvement, communicated to the user every 7th lesson.
  • Weekly leagues (iOS only) – competitive practice challenges with progress tracking and leaderboards.
  • Stop & Go and Continue Playing (iOS only) – practice tools that pause lessons until the user is ready and resume progress seamlessly.
  • Digital amplifier (iOS only) – simulates guitar amplifiers and effects through mobile devices without additional hardware.
  • Guitar tools – built-in tuner, metronome, and practice calendar.

History

[edit]

The platform originated in 2020 as Amped Guitar, a Zoundio-developed app promoted in partnership with Gibson. In January 2021, the service was rebranded as the Gibson App with expanded features and Gibson branding.

Reception

[edit]

The Gibson App has received mixed but generally positive coverage from music publications.

Guitar World described the app as “a beautifully designed app that’s very strong on content for beginners” and highlighted its “superb” step-by-step pathway for novice players. The review praised its gamified lessons, animated fretboard, and roster of instructors, but noted that the app was limited for intermediate and advanced guitarists, with some musical genres underrepresented.[2]

Rolling Stone called the app “changing the guitar-teaching game,” emphasizing its interactive feedback, virtual jam sessions, and library of Gibson TV content. The publication also reported that the app saw rapid uptake during the COVID-19 pandemic, with over 150,000 downloads within days of release.[3]

In a 2023 roundup, Acoustic Life included the Gibson App among the best guitar learning platforms, citing its user-friendly design and range of beginner lessons. The review, however, concluded that the app was best suited to those just starting out and less useful for advanced player[4]

Availability

[edit]

The Gibson App is available for iOS devices, including iPhone, iPad, and Mac computers with Apple silicon processors (M1 and later). An Android version is also available, although it does not currently include all features found on iOS, such as the Leagues mode and AI feedback.[5]
