Gatos Trail Recording Studio is a professional recording studio located in Joshua Tree, California. Established in 2015 by drummer and engineer Dan Joeright, the facility is known as a destination studio offering both music production services and on-site lodging for artists.[1][2] It has hosted sessions for musicians including Sharon Van Etten, Young the Giant, Yawning Man, and Unsane, as well as producers such as Ethan Allen (music producer) and Chris Goss.[3][4]
In 2025 the studio launched the Trail Blazers™ Masterclass, a retreat-style educational program bringing together established producers, engineers, and artists with emerging creatives. The inaugural seminar featured 11-time Grammy Award–winning producer Joe Chiccarelli, known for his work with Elton John, The White Stripes and Morrissey.[5]
History
[edit]Gatos Trail Recording Studio was conceived and built by drummer and audio engineer Dan Joeright over a two-year period from 2013 to 2015. Designed as a destination facility that combines professional recording capabilities with the high-desert landscape of Joshua Tree, the studio officially opened in January 2015.[6]
The first artists to record at Gatos Trail were Alexander Hacke of Einstürzende Neubauten and Danielle de Picciotto of Crime and the City Solution.[6]
Facilities and location
[edit]The studio sits on a secluded property in Joshua Tree, about 40 minutes from Palm Springs International Airport and roughly two and a half hours from Los Angeles.[6] Its control room centers on a Neotek Elite 28-channel analog console, integrated with Avid HDX converters and 32 channels of Avid HD I/O; it also houses a Studer A827 24-track, 2-inch tape machine and a Universal Audio Apollo Twin X (Quad) for additional I/O and monitoring. Sessions are run in Pro Tools Ultimate, Logic Pro X, Ableton Live, and Luna.[7]

[edit]The *Los Angeles Times* included Gatos Trail in its list of the best recording studios in Los Angeles and Southern California, noting its appeal as a desert-based retreat for artists seeking an alternative to urban recording environments.[13] The *Desert Sun* cited Gatos Trail in coverage of notable California desert albums.[14] Trade outlet *StudioExpresso* speaks of its analog/digital hybrid setup and high-desert location.[15]
Trail Blazers Masterclass
