Draft:Gathr

  • Comment: I would very much question the need for that long list of films. Wikipedia is not meant to be a comprehensive catalogue of someone's or something's entire output. If you feel the need to list some of them, pick the most notable ones, I'd say max 10. DoubleGrazing (talk) 17:38, 27 October 2025 (UTC)

Gathr is an American film distribution and event technology platform founded in 2011 by filmmaker Scott Glosserman.[1]The company developed a model of theatrical-on-demand distribution, allowing audiences to organize local screenings of films once enough tickets are reserved.[2]Users request a movie at a local theater and commit to buying tickets; if enough tickets are reserved (meeting a threshold set by the venue), the screening is confirmed (or “tips”), and only then are credit cards charged.[1]The model has been described by Fast Company as “Kickstarter meets Netflix” for theatrical releases, emphasizing its audience-driven approach to independent film distribution.[2]Glosserman, also known for directing the mockumentary Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, created Gathr to explore new models of theatrical distributions.[1]

Gathr’s platform has been used to distribute a range of independent films and documentaries.[1]The company’s theatrical-on-demand service gained attention in 2013 when the documentary Girl Rising used the model to organize hundreds of crowd-driven screenings across the United States.[3]By aggregating local demand online, screenings are confirmed only once a preset number of advance tickets are reserved, shifting financial risk away from theaters.[4]In addition to new independent releases, Gathr reportedly partnered with studios and content owners to make select catalog and arthouse titles available for on-demand bookings.[1]

In 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic forced cinemas to close, Gathr began promoting virtual and hybrid screening options through its online event platform “Gathr At Home.”[5]Through Gathr At Home, filmmakers can host digital premieres, Q&As, and streaming events for remote audiences, effectively ‘event-izing’ film releases online.[5]
