The series focuses on its title character Fred usually being caught in dangerous or wacky situations, and the player is tasked with helping him survive for as long as possible.
Games
[edit]All the games in the Fred series were originally released for mobile devices. However, Running Fred, Super Falling Fred and Skiing Fred were also released to Poki.com, making them playable on PC.
Falling Fred (2011)
[edit]Falling Fred is an endless runner game and the first entry in the Fred series, first released on February 23, 2011, for iOS.[2] The player controls Fred by tilting their device around avoiding the dangerous obstacles below him.[3][4][5]
Running Fred (2012)
[edit]Running Fred is an endless runner game, the sequel to Falling Fred (2011), and the second entry in the Fred series, first released on February 5, 2012, for iOS. The player controls Fred and has to run throughout various locations, trying to evade Grimmy, the grim reaper. Fred runs automatically but the player can steer him left or right and jump. There is a shop that contains unlockable content such as characters and further abilities.[6][7][8] There are three available gamemodes.[9]
Super Falling Fred (2012)
[edit]Super Falling Fred is an endless runner game, the remake of Falling Fred (2011), and the third entry in the Fred series, first released on October 16, 2012, for iOS. Super Falling Fred iretains the same gameplay of the original, but with added flair.[10]
Skiing Fred (2013)
[edit]Skiing Fred is an endless runner sports game and the fourth entry in the Fred series, first released on May 26, 2013, for iOS. In a similar manner to Running Fred (2012), the player controls Fred, riding a ski, and must navigate a snowy mountain while avoiding various obstacles and natural disasters, and collecting bonuses, all while keeping away from Grimmy, the grim reaper.[11][12]
Clicker Fred (2017)
[edit]Clicker Fred is an endless runner incremental game and the fifth entry in the Fred series, released on May 10, 2017, for Android. The player starts off with classic Fred but can purchase different Fred variants, who are all seen running throughout a hellish world, and tapping the screen repeatedly speeds them up.[13]
Football Fred (2018)
[edit]Football Fred is a sports game and the sixth entry in the Fred series, released in 2018 for Android and iOS.[‡ 1][14]
Characters
[edit]- Richardson L. Frederick "Fred" III[3] is the titular protagonist of the Fred series. He is an accident-prone kid often seen in dangerous situations.
- Grimmy Reaper is a depiction of the Grim Reaper, serving as a recurring antagonist in the Fred series. She serves a major role in Running Fred (2012) and Skiing Fred (2013), and appears in the tutorial of Clicker Fred (2017). In-game, she is always trailing Fred and will become apparent if Fred is moving too slow. If Fred doesn't speed up in time, Grimmy strikes and kills him.
Reception
[edit]The Fred series isn't very known. However, most of the games have been met with mostly positive reception. Clicker Fred and Football Fred are lesser known in the series.
Falling Fred (2011)
[edit]Mat Smith of recombu.com states, "It's an enjoyable time waster- and at only 59p there's more than enough to entertain at that price".[15] Brian Mongold of AppAdvice states "Falling Fred is a fun and challenging game that kept me coming back for more."[3]
Running Fred (2012)
[edit]The most prominent installment in the series, Running Fred was met with positive reviews. Andrew Nesvadba of AppSpy states that the game is "a seriously addictive runner with a high skill cap for high-score junkies to enjoy."[16] Ruan Shiels of iFanzine states, "Running Fred takes Dedalord's 'Fred' franchise in a bold and brilliant new direction while retaining the lashings of cutesified ultra-violence and sick sense of humor that made the original a stand-out game. A must-have freebie."[9] GamesReviews.com states that "Running Fred may be an endless runner, but it’s got plenty of twists on the genre to keep players interested."[7] Kanji Prearms of GIZORAMA states that Running Fred is a "truly generous game" and that "you'll struggle to run out of things to do."[6]
Super Falling Fred (2012)
[edit]Super Falling Fred received positive reviews. Andrew Nesvadba of AppSpy states that the game "takes the original falling title and polishes absolutely every aspect by packing in new power-ups, a bunch of unlockable characters and a challenge that scales to nightmarish levels, all at the low cost of 'free'."[10] AppsPirate states, "Super Falling Fred is solid as a rock when it comes to its gameplay, game concept, and graphics."[17]
Skiing Fred (2013)
[edit]Skiing Fred received mixed-to-positive reviews. George Ponder of Windows Central states, "While I liked the game, it could use a little fine-tuning. Nothing detrimental but just a few tweaks that would improve the overall gaming experience."[12] Jennifer Allen of 148Apps.com states, "There's a charm to Skiing Fred that is never quite cemented by its gameplay. While fun, there's a certain sense of excitement missing throughout proceedings."[18] Dave Flodine of AppSpy states that the game is "another endless runner that will provide some amusement to fans of the genre, but ultimately lacks the spark to leave an impression."[19]
