Franco Farina (born July 3, 1958) is an Italian-American opera singer known for his performances in the operas of Giuseppe Verdi, Giacomo Puccini, and Richard Wagner. He has appeared at major opera houses including the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, Opéra National de Paris, Vienna State Opera, and Royal Opera House.[1]

Early life and education

Farina was born in Trumbull, Connecticut, to an Italian-American family. He began vocal studies in his teens and pursued formal training at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, where he studied with Richard Miller. He earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in voice, appearing in student productions and receiving recognition for the clarity and range of his tenor voice. After completing his studies at Oberlin, Farina became a graduate assistant at The Hartt School and later joined the American Opera Center at the Juilliard School. At age twenty-four, he made his professional debut at the New York City Opera. Oberlin College later awarded him an honorary Doctor of Music degree.

Career

Farina’s professional debut at the New York City Opera led to invitations from major international houses. He made his Metropolitan Opera debut as Rodolfo in La bohème and went on to perform more than 200 times there in productions of La traviata, Madama Butterfly, Turandot, Il trovatore, Aida, Tosca, Norma, Cavalleria rusticana, and Pagliacci. He has also appeared at La Scala, Opéra National de Paris, Vienna State Opera, Bavarian State Opera, Hamburg State Opera, Teatro La Fenice, and the Arena di Verona.[2]

Teaching

Farina has taught voice and presented masterclasses at Oberlin College, The Hartt School, Juilliard, Berlin, Paris, Brussels, Tokyo, Beijing, Madrid, and New York. He has also served as a juror for international vocal competitions.

Personal life

Franco Farina is married to soprano Luiza Farina. The couple resides in Los Angeles, California.
