Francisco Duarte Lopes, a seasoned Portuguese diplomat, appointed Ambassador of Portugal[1][2] to the United States on April 2022. He replaced Domingos Fezas Vital.

Duarte Lopes has held multiple high-profile roles, in Portuguese diplomacy, including Portugal’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations[3], Director-General for European Affairs, and diplomatic adviser to the Prime Minister.

He has served in posts in Europe, Pakistan, and Denmark.

In June 2022, President Joe Biden formally welcomed[4] Francisco Duarte Lopes as Portugal’s new Ambassador to the United States. In a letter accepting his credentials, Biden praised the enduring U.S.–Portugal relationship, highlighting shared interests in climate action, ocean protection, democracy, and international development. During their meeting at the White House on June 13, both reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening transatlantic ties.
