Faiyaz Alam Shaikh (born 2 February 1998 in Govandi, Mumbai) is an social worker and politician.[1] He is the General Secretary of the New Sangam Welfare Society.[2]
Life and Education
[edit]Advocate Faiyaz Alam Shaikh, son of Kitabullah Shaikh, born1994 in Mumbai and belonging to a family heir from Gonda, Uttar Pradesh, completed his schooling (1st to 10th) from Anjuman Behrul Uloom Urdu High School (Urdu Medium) and pursued 11th & 12th Science stream from M.H. Saboo Siddik College, Byculla. He earned a Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering, an LL.B. from the University of Mumbai, and a postgraduate degree in Journalism and Mass Communication from IGNOU.[1][3]
Political career
[edit]During his studies, Faiyaz Alam Sheikh founded the New Sangam Welfare Society and is its General Secretary. In 2022, Faiyaz, representing the Govandi New Sangam Welfare Society, has been actively advocating for the relocation of a biomedical waste treatment plant in Govandi. Residents, including Shaikh, have raised concerns about the plant’s impact on public health, linking it to respiratory issues and tuberculosis. Despite initial deadlines, the relocation has been delayed, and Shaikh continues to engage with authorities to ensure the timely movement of the facility and address community health concerns.[4][5][6] Sheikh was actively involved in these campaigns as part of his role in the society.
Since childhood, he was very interested in social work and politics. In 2024, he joined the AIMIM party along with Atique Khan, Saeed Khan and has been working in it for a long time
Activism
[edit]During the COVID-19 pandemic, Shaikh Faiyaz Alam led the Govandi New Sangam Welfare Society, aimed at improving the socio-economic conditions of slum residents in the M East ward of Mumbai. The organization addressed civic issues such as sanitation, waste management, and environmental concerns. Shaikh and the committee filed a public interest litigation to relocate a biomedical waste incinerator from a residential area, resulting in a Bombay High Court order directing the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to expedite the relocation.[7]
In November 2023, Shaikh Faiyaz Alam, convenor of the Govandi Citizens Welfare Forum, visited a BMC-run Urdu-medium school in Shivaji Nagar, Govandi. He observed that students in Classes 4 and 6 were sitting on the floor due to a shortage of desks and appealed to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to provide adequate facilities.[8]
In September 2025, Faiyaz, founder of the Govandi Citizens Welfare Forum, launched a 'No School, No Vote' campaign after the BMC failed to take over a newly constructed CBSE school in Govandi. He urged voters to withhold their ballots until the school was operational and provided adequate facilities.[9]
He is convenor of the Govandi Citizens Welfare Forum, filed a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission India (NHRC) regarding manual scavenging in Shivaji Nagar-Baiganwadi. The NHRC issued a final warning to the BMC, requiring corrective action by October 24, 2025.[10]
Recognition and impact
[edit]Faiyaz Alam’s work with the Govandi New Sangam Welfare Society and other civic initiatives has been covered by multiple media outlets. His campaigns on issues such as the relocation of biomedical waste plants, school infrastructure improvements, and opposition to public health hazards have received attention in Free Press Journal, Mumbai Mirror, Hindustan Times, and Mid-Day.[7][8] Through these initiatives, Shaikh has raised public awareness on civic and environmental issues in Govandi and contributed to legal and administrative actions addressing community concerns.

[edit]- In 2023, Faiyaz Alam Shaikh was honoured with the “Angels of Mumbai” award by the Free Press Journal for his work with the Govandi Citizens Welfare Forum in addressing civic and environmental issues in slum areas.[11][12]
