Faelris is a Canadian metal band founded in 2021 by musician Jean-Raphaël Couillard in Saguenay. Originally conceived as a one-man project, Faelris blends elements of melodic death metal, doom, gothic, symphonic, black, and folk metal. The band describes its sound as Doomsaga Metal[1], combining fantasy themes with sorrowful and epic compositions. In 2025, Faelris expanded into a full three-member live band.[2]
History
[edit]Formation and early work (2021–2022)
[edit]Faelris was founded during the COVID-19 pandemic by Jean-Raphaël Couillard. The name is a fusion of his own name with faerie and Fenris, the Norse wolf god,[3] reflecting the project’s blend of fantasy, melancholy, and might. The debut album, The Circle of Iron, was released in 2021, followed by a remastered edition, The Circle of Iron (2.0), in 2025.[4]
The Black Book of Sorrow and band expansion (2023–2025)
[edit]In 2024, Faelris released its second album, The Black Book of Sorrow[5], introducing a darker, more gothic aesthetic. The album emphasized slower tempos, orchestral synths, and mournful lyrical themes. The next year, Couillard recruited guitarist Mat Gaut and drummer Simon-Pierre Tremblay to form a live trio.[6]
Remasters and future direction (2025–present)
[edit]This is the year where the Circle of Iron 2.0 got released, A remaster said to be louder with a more balanced and polished sound[7]. As of now, we know that Faelris plan to also release a remaster of his second album The Black Book of Sorrow, might be preparing to do live shows and is currently working on a conceptual album which aims to musically depict human history on which we don't know a lot at the moment.[8]
Musical style and influences
[edit]Faelris’s style combines elements of doom, folk, gothic, melodic death, and symphonic metal[9], but have also been called progessive on the release of their first album.[10] The band got influences from bands like Wintersun and Ensiferum[11] but we can also hear probable influences from bands like Katatonia and While Heaven Wept. The project is noted for its cinematic atmosphere, thematic ambition, and tragic narrative tone. The band coined the term Doomsaga Metal[12] to describe its fusion of heavy, epic storytelling with emotional depth.
