Introduction

[edit]

The European College of Sport Science (ECSS) is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the promotion and application of multi- and interdisciplinary science in sport, exercise, physical activity, and health.[1] It was founded in 1995 in Nice, France,[2] and has been described as one of the major sport science associations in Europe.[3] Its office is currently based in Cologne, Germany.[4] In 2023, ECSS partnered with Wiley to publish the European Journal of Sport Science, described as ‘one of the preeminent multidisciplinary sport science journals.[5]

Objective and purpose

[edit]

The ECSS cooperates with non-European associations and sport scientists and has four core missions:[6]

  • Disseminate high quality, innovative science
  • Empower the development of young scientists
  • Build and retain an engaged ECSS community
  • Develop partnerships within the private and public sectors

Membership

[edit]

The organisation offers individual membership to create a European and worldwide network for scientific exchange and interaction. Members include researchers, academics, scientists, lecturers, coaches, and physiotherapists from areas such as biomechanics and motor control, physiology and nutrition, psychology, social sciences and humanities, sports and exercise medicine and health, and applied sports science.[7]

Structure

[edit]

As a non-profit organisation, the ECSS has a charter detailing its name, domicile, status, purpose, and tasks.[8] Executive bodies, which serve on an honorary basis, include the General Assembly, the Executive Board, the President, and the Directorate. The ECSS Bye-Laws provide detailed regulations and guidelines on the formation and function of these bodies.[9]

Annual congresses

[edit]

The ECSS organises an annual congress, held since 1996, which includes invited symposia and multi-, inter-, and mono-disciplinary sessions. The congress typically hosts around 3000 international sport scientists from academic and applied careers.[10]
