Comment: The "Legacy" section is an inappropriate advert, and there are tonal issues throughout. Blogspot also isn't an appropriate source. qcne (talk) 16:35, 10 March 2025 (UTC)

Eskirla (alternatively spelled Skirla) is a Mexican rock band formed in 1980 in Chihuahua, by vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter Rodolfo Borja. Renowned for their Spanish-language rock, the band integrates hard rock, blues, and folk music influences, reflecting northern Mexican culture in their lyrics. Over four decades, Eskirla has released five studio albums, several singles, and a compilation, establishing themselves as one of the longest-running bands in Chihuahua’s rock scene.
History
[edit]Formation (1969–1979)
[edit]Rodolfo Borja (b. 1955) began playing guitar in Anáhuac, Chihuahua, during the late 1960s with local rock bands. After moving to Chihuahua City in 1971, he formed Bluesmanía in 1977 with Alberto Chávez, Luis Tena, and Leonardo Gallegos. Following a brief stint in Denver, Colorado, the group returned in early 1980, rebranding as Eskirla for a debut performance at La Fonda Verde.[1][2]
Early Years and First Single (1980–1988)
[edit]Eskirla debuted in Chihuahua on March 21, 1980. The original lineup included Rodolfo Borja on vocals, Luis Tena on bass, and Alberto Chávez on drums, later joined by Jaime Lozano on guitar.[3] Their first single, "Operadora / No es el camino" (1980), gained local radio play, followed by an untitled 1982 cassette.[2] Over the following years, Eskirla performed at various venues, including "El Hobbit", "El Sotano", "Jazz ¾", and "La Balada del Gato", often sharing the stage with other local bands. In 1988, they signed with Pentagrama, a record label from Mexico City, and released their debut studio album, Historias de fantasmas (Ghost Stories), recorded on vinyl and reissued on CD in 2021.[4] The album introduced them to a broader audience with original songs written by the band, aligning with the growing national movement to revive Spanish-language rock.
Consolidation and Later Releases (1989–2015)
[edit]Eskirla solidified their status as a local band with a unique proposal. By 1992, they were considered a cultural reference in Chihuahua, leading to a concert at Teatro de los Héroes, the city's main cultural venue. The lineup at the time included Rodolfo Borja on guitar and vocals, Luis Tena on bass, Alejandro Tirado on drums, and Armando Núñez on guitar, with guest musicians like Francisco "Kiko" Rodríguez and a string trio from the Escuela de Bellas Artes of the Universidad Autónoma de Chihuahua.[5] In 1996, Eskirla contributed to a project for Sima Records in Ciudad Juárez titled El norte no está pintado (The North Isn't Painted), a compilation featuring various local bands. Two years later, in 1998, they released their second studio album, Ilegal,[6] followed by Sobreviviente (Survivor), in 2002, considered by some their best work due to improved technical and musical support.[3]
In 2011, they released El tiempo y el camino (Time and the Path), a compilation album featuring 19 classic tracks from their earlier albums.[3] Three years later, Rodolfo Borja was awarded with the 2014 "Emeritus Creator" medal, by the Instituto Chihuahuense de la Cultura, the National Council for Culture and the Arts, and the State Fund for Culture and the Arts of Chihuahua through the "David Alfaro Siqueiros" Creation and Artistic Development Program.[7][8][9][10] Their fifth album, Como regresar (How to Return), was released in 2015, reinforcing their relevance in the local rock scene.[3][11][12]
Recent Activity
[edit]On March 25, 2023, Eskirla released their album El Plan (The Plan), addressing contemporary issues, including government measures during the COVID-19 pandemic.[13] The band remains active locally, primarily performing for anniversary events.[14]
Musical Style
[edit]Eskirla's style of Spanish-language rock combines elements of hard rock, blues, and folk music, with lyrics exploring themes of migration, violence, and marginalization in northern Mexico.
