Eric Nathaniel Hacker (born April 25, 2001)[1] is an American middle- and long-distance runner from Ohio who competes in para-athletics in the T38 classification.[2] He is a multiple national-level medalist and record holder in junior para-athletics events,[3] and a graduate of Shawnee State University.[4]
Early life and education
[edit]Hacker was born in Columbus, Ohio, and raised in Chillicothe, Ohio.[1] Diagnosed with cerebral palsy in infancy, he wore leg braces during his early childhood.[1] He began therapy and physical training at an early age and later started competitive running.[1] During junior high, Hacker qualified six times for state-level championships.[5]
He graduated from Unioto High School in 2020, where he was a member of the National Honor Society and consistently made the honor roll throughout his high school years.[5] In 2022, Hacker graduated from Shawnee State University, where he was named to the President's List for academic excellence during the spring semester.[6]
High school career
[edit]Hacker attended Unioto High School in Chillicothe, Ohio.[5] He qualified for the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) State Championships 14 times across track and cross-country and was an eight-time conference champion.[5]
At the 2019 OHSAA Division II Boys State Cross Country Championships held at National Trail Raceway, Hacker helped lead Unioto High School to a team runner-up finish, placing second overall with a team score of 105 points, behind champion Woodridge High School.[7]
He was also a multiple-time Academic All-Ohio honoree and recipient of the 2020 Archie Griffin Award recognizing athletic and academic achievement.[5]
Para athletics and national competition
[edit]Hacker competes in the T38 para-athletics classification.[3] At the 2019 Adaptive Sports USA Junior Nationals, he won national titles in the 1500 m and 3000 m T38 events, both setting national records in his classification.[3] Adaptive Track & Field USA records list Hacker’s 2019 Junior Nationals 1500 m T38 performance (4:29.0) as an American record.[2]
He has since become a 13-time national qualifier, two-time All-American, and two-time Junior National Champion.[3] He was also a qualifier for the Paralympic Trials and competed on the pathway toward the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games.[8]
Collegiate career
[edit]Hacker attended Shawnee State University, where he competed in cross country and distance track events for the Bears.[4] He graduated from Shawnee State University after completing his collegiate athletic and academic career.[4]
Recognition
[edit]In 2019 the Ohio House of Representatives adopted House Resolution 225 (133rd General Assembly) honoring Hacker for winning national titles at the Adaptive Sports USA Junior Nationals.[9]
He has been profiled in national and regional media for his athletic success and advocacy for adaptive sports.[1]
Personal life
[edit]Hacker resides in Columbus, Ohio, and continues to train and compete in distance running and para-athletics.[4]
