History

[edit]

Envato was founded in Sydney, Australia, in 2006. It began as FlashDen Archived 2025-04-30 at the Wayback Machine, a marketplace for Flash files, and later expanded into a suite of specialized platforms under the umbrella Envato Market, including:

  • ThemeForest - for website themes
  • AudioJungle - for royalty-free music and sound effects
  • CodeCanyon - for code snippets and plugins
  • VideoHive - for stock footage, motion graphics and video templates
  • GraphicRiver - for graphic design resources[5]
  • Mixkit - for free video, music and sound effects
  • Reshot - for free icons and illustrations
  • Photodune - for stock photography marketplace
  • 3DOcean - for 3D models, textures, and related assets

In 2007, Envato introduced Envato Tuts+ Archived 2025-08-20 at the Wayback Machine, a content library of over 1,300 courses featuring free tutorials, tips and trends. In the early 2010s, the company launched a short-term initiative called the Freelance Mac App Bundle, a curated collection of productivity software.[6] In 2018, Envato acquired Mexico-based mockup and design startup PlaceIt.

In 2020, Hichame Assi, previously CEO of HotelsCombined, was appointed CEO of Envato.[7]

Growth and AI Integration

[edit]

In the 2020s, Envato shifted its strategic focus primarily to its subscription offering. In 2024, the company started to introduce AI-powered tools – to date, these include:

  • VideoGen – for generating hyperrealistic videos, including audio, using a prompt or image upload[8]
  • ImageGen and ImageEdit – tools for creating and editing images with AI
  • VoiceGen – for AI-generated voiceovers
  • MusicGen – for AI-generated music[9]
  • InspoGen – a visual inspiration and design curation tool[10]

In 2025, Envato partnered with KitBash3D to offer a range of 3D model kits for use in digital content production.[11]

Acquisition by Shutterstock

[edit]

In 2024, Envato was acquired by Shutterstock for USD $372 million. The acquisition expanded Shutterstock’s digital asset offerings and customer base by incorporating Envato’s marketplace and subscription offerings.[12]
