Eneref Institute is a research organization that publishes technical and policy reports related to sustainable development and environmental technology. The institute's work has been covered internationally in diverse outlets since the early 2010s, and its director has been cited in reporting by the Associated Press and NDTV and published in the New York Times in his capacity as the organization's leader. Its campaigns address energy efficiency, sustainable design, resource efficiency, and renewable-energy strategies. Independent reporting has examined the institute's technical assessments and policy-oriented proposals, and its research has been cited in academic and professional studies on building performance, energy use, and environmental design.

Campaigns

[edit]

Right to Daylight

[edit]

Beginning in 2013, Eneref Institute founder Seth Warren Rose authored editorially reviewed articles on daylighting in professional journals, including a 2013 article in American School & University examining daylighting in school design.[1] and a 2014 article in Lighting Design + Application (LD+A), the journal of the Illuminating Engineering Society, addressing barriers to daylighting adoption in building design.[2]

The organization formally launched a campaign in 2015, introducing the concept of "Natural Interior Daylight" as an approach to using natural light as a primary interior illumination source in building design.[3]

In 2019, the organization expanded this advocacy by submitting a proposal to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights calling for the classification of access to daylight as a natural right.[4]

In 2018, Subaru of America cited research by Eneref Institute in connection with its sustainability initiatives.[5]

The campaign was listed as a resource by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) Daylight Management Council[6] and has been cited in academic and engineering literature examining the relationship between daylighting and energy consumption.[7][8]

Industry dissemination of Eneref Institute daylighting research has included citation by IEN Consultants in its examination of the relationship between retail daylighting design and sales performance,[9] as well as inclusion in a daylighting guide published by Kingspan (ISEQ 20 Ireland) addressing natural daylight exposure and cognitive performance in educational settings.[10]

Acuity Brands (NYSE: AYI) included Eneref Institute daylighting research among its online resource materials for facility designers.[11]

Cool Room. Cool Earth.

[edit]

Eneref Institute launched the multi-year Cool Room. Cool Earth. campaign in 2019[12]. JARN reported that Eneref Institute brought together municipalities, homebuilders, and HVAC manufacturers to promote the expanded adoption of inverter-driven variable-speed air conditioners and heat pumps as part of its Cool Room. Cool Earth. campaign[12].

ACHR News reported on Eneref's research into air-filtration performance in New York City classrooms, including its assessments of airflow and indoor-air-quality considerations[13]. Air Conditioning Today reported Eneref's findings on MERV-13 filtration in New York City schools and noted that the New York City Department of Education had authorized the use of MERV-13 filters in window air-conditioning units[14].

Solar Thermal Advantage

[edit]

The Solar Thermal Advantage (STA) was a multi-sector technology advocacy campaign active from 2009 through 2012, launched by Eneref to increase the adoption of solar heating and cooling through media outreach and institutional engagement. In 2011, Solarthermalworld.org reported that the program was supported by a coalition of industry participants[15].

Energy Manager noted that the initiative sought case studies for distribution to trade-press editors as part of its media outreach strategy[16]. Media coverage included reporting on Eneref's research into the long-term performance of solar heating systems[17] and citations of its data on residential hot-water energy use in the United States[18].

The United Nations Environment Programme cited Solar Thermal Advantage as an example of an awareness-raising campaign in its 2015 guide on solar heating and cooling communication practices[19]. Academic literature also referenced the initiative, with the Proceedings of the 3rd International Conference on Infrastructure Development citing Eneref's solar-thermal market research in a review of renewable-energy options[20].

Southwest Gas (NYSE: SWX) hosted Eneref Institute's solar-thermal guidance on its website as informational material for customers participating in the utility's solar-incentive program[21]. According to a 2011 letter from Johnson Controls (NYSE: JCI), the initiative facilitated high-level discussions with the U.S. Department of Defense to expedite solar implementation in federal facilities[22].

Eneref's annual market reports were excerpted in Solar Industry magazine in 2009, 2010, and 2011[23].

Lead the Leap

[edit]

In 2021, Eneref Institute launched a sustainability-focused initiative reported by independent media as the Rebrand Afghanistan campaign, with Pajhwok Afghan News and Salam Watandar noting alliance meetings held in Washington, D.C.[24][25].

Both outlets reported that Afghan political and civil-society leaders participated in the discussions, which examined proposals for 100% renewable energy use and carbon-neutral economic development frameworks[24][25].

Foreign Policy In Focus reported that the initiative assembled a group of prominent Afghan advisors and engaged national institutions, noting that the campaign had secured the support of the Afghan Senate and outlined a framework for carbon-neutral resource development[26][27].

Others

[edit]

Build Australia reported on an Eneref Institute report examining the environmental characteristics of polished concrete flooring, with related Eneref research also cited by Designing Idea and the Sustainable Buildings Initiative.[28][29][30]

In a technical article published by Xylem Inc. (NYSE: XYL), a global water-technology company, Eneref Institute research on cooling-tower filtration was cited in connection with industrial cooling applications.[31]

Eneref Institute's Sustainable Hydronics initiative addressed efficiency in commercial hydronic HVAC systems.[32]

Media

[edit]

Eneref Institute has been featured in international media as a source of expertise on climate and sustainability topics. In 2012, The New York Times published a letter to the editor by Seth Warren Rose on climate discourse, identifying him as executive director of the Eneref Institute[33].

Executive Director Seth Warren Rose has been interviewed by AP News, an independent global wire service, regarding the climate implications of major sporting events, including the Paris Olympics[34] and Saudi Arabia's 2034 World Cup bid[35].

The organization has also been featured in international broadcast news. NDTV interviewed Rose in segments addressing marine heatwaves[36] and the interpretation of COP29 climate negotiations[37]. India Today consulted the Institute regarding seasonal climate shifts, specifically delayed winters[38]. Dezeen interviewed Rose for its Olympic Impact Series, featuring his climate commentary on the environmental implications of the Paris 2024 Games[39].

Spaces4Learning reported on the Institute's 2019 campaign urging state education executives to incorporate interior daylight standards to improve student performance[40]. In May 2024, Rose appeared on the Better Buildings For Humans podcast to discuss the role of natural light in buildings and its framing as a "fundamental right" that enhances well-being and productivity[41]
