End Fossil: Occupy refers to a student led campaign which began and was most active in 2022 and 2023.[1] focused on the demand to phase out fossil fuels by 2030 with encampment occupations of schools and colleges with protests and other events focused on climate change[2]. As a movement it reached around 50 school and colleges occupations with branches in countries such as Portugal, Italy, Czech Republic, Germany, Spain, Belgium[3], Uganda[4] and the United Kingdom[5]. Besides an unifying agreement on the phasing out of fossil fuels, demands to each school and university or government varied with each branch of the campaign[6] - for example, activists in Madrid and Barcelona demanded no fundign or agreements with fossil companies[7]. Different institutions had different responses to the students - due to some protests involving staying in the buildings after closure time, there have been instances of students physically removed by the police on disobedience charges[8].
In Lisbon in 2024 the groups involved with End Fossil Occupy co-organized the encampments with students interested in creating Palestine solidarity encampments in the country, leading to the 'End the Genocide, End Fossil Fuels' movement[9]
