Elias Grandy (born 1980) is a German–Japanese conductor. He was born in Munich to a German father and a Japanese mother.[1] He studied cello, chamber music and music theory in Basel and Munich, and later studied conducting at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin. He performed as a cellist with orchestras such as the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Komische Oper Berlin.[2]

Grandy began his conducting career in 2012 as Resident Conductor at the Staatstheater Darmstadt.[3][4] In 2015, he received the highest award (second prize, with no first prize awarded) at the Sir Georg Solti International Conducting Competition.[5]

From 2015 to 2023, he served as Generalmusikdirektor (General Music Director) of Theater und Orchester Heidelberg, leading both the Heidelberg Opera and the Heidelberg Philharmonic Orchestra.[6][7]

Grandy has made debuts with major orchestras including the hr-Sinfonieorchester, Vienna Symphony, Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Minnesota Orchestra.[8][9] As an opera conductor, he has appeared at Frankfurt Opera, the Semperoper Dresden, and Tokyo Nikikai Opera.[10]

Grandy has long been associated with the Pacific Music Festival (PMF) in Sapporo. He first attended PMF in 2004 as a cello academy student, returned in 2012 as a Conducting Academy student under Fabio Luisi,[11] and participated again in 2024 as a guest conductor.[12]

In April 2025, he will assume the position of Chief Conductor of the Sapporo Symphony Orchestra.[13][14] It has also been announced that he will become Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra starting in the 2026–27 season.[15][16]
