The Eastern Regional Military Command (Burmese: အရှေ့ပိုင်းတိုင်းစစ်ဌာနချုပ်, abbreviated Ya Pa Kha (Burmese: ရပခ) is a regional military command headquartered in Taunggyi, Shan State, Myanmar.[1][2] Its primary responsibility is the defense, security, and military operations within southern Shan State and adjacent areas. In addition, it administers and supervises the operational, administrative, and logistical matters of subordinate units, and relays orders and instructions from higher commands.[3][4] The current commander is Lieutenant General Zaw Min Latt (Army No. 27183) (DSSC-37).[5]
History
[edit]The Eastern Regional Military Command was formed in late 1961 in Taunggyi by combining the headquarters of the No. 4 Infantry Battalion in southern Shan State (Taunggyi), the No. 9 Infantry Battalion in eastern Shan State (Kyaingtong), and the No. 6 Infantry Battalion in northern Shan State (Lashio).[6][7]
In the 1970s, the Communist Party of Burma became increasingly active in northeastern Myanmar. In June 1970, the Strategic Command Headquarters was opened in Lashio to directly oversee military operations in northern Shan State.[8] To deal more effectively with the insurgency, in July 1972, northern Shan State was separated from the Eastern Command and placed under the newly formed Northeastern Regional Military Command based in Lashio. In 1996, the eastern Shan State region was reorganized as the Triangle Regional Military Command, and in 2012 the Eastern Central Regional Military Command was formed, both separated from the Eastern Command’s area of responsibility.[9]
The first commander of the Eastern Regional Military Command was Major General San Yu (Army No. 3569), who served from 16 October 1961 to 13 November 1961. He was succeeded by Colonel Maung Shwe (Army No. 3575).[10]
