Voivode Description Historical region Date ruled
Gelou
Gelou was the Vlach ruler of Transylvania around the turn of the 10th century during the Hungarian Conquest of the Carpathian Basin. In Romanian historiography, Gelou is described as one of the three Romanian dukes who ruled a historical region of present-day Romania in the early 10th century. The primary source referring to his existence is the Gesta Hungarorum. According to the Gesta, Gelou was the leader of a duchy that comprised the majority of Transylvania, who was defeated and killed by the invading Magyars. Many historians dispute the authenticity of the Gesta, however it is certain that a Vlach population existed in Transylvania since at least the late 12th century, around the time the Gesta was written.
