Dirk Peppel (German: Dirk Peppel; born 1964 in Frankfurt am Main)[1] is a German flutist.[2] He is currently a Professor of Flute at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln (Cologne University of Music and Dance) [3]and at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Rostock (Rostock University of Music and Theatre). Previously, he served as Principal Flutist of the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe (Baden State Theatre Karlsruhe). Since 2021, he has been a member of the board of directors at the Wuppertal campus of the Cologne University of Music and Dance.[4]
Biography
[edit]Dirk Peppel was born in 1964 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. He graduated in 1989 from the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen with a degree in Flute, studying under Professor Matthias Rütters. During his musical education, Peppel also received guidance from renowned musicians in France and Switzerland, including André Jaunet, Maxence Larrieux, and Jean-Pierre Rampal.[5]
From 1987 to 2014, Peppel served as Principal Flutist at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe (Karlsruhe Baden State Opera House)[6]. Over his thirty-plus years of professional work, he has been a guest flutist with over fifty symphony orchestras and opera houses worldwide. Peppel is also an accomplished chamber musician and was awarded the “Chamber Musician” honor by the Federal Government of Baden-Württemberg in 2000. He has been invited multiple times to perform at major international music festivals, with concert tours across the Americas, Israel, China, Japan, and South Korea.
In addition to his performance career, Peppel has conducted numerous international masterclasses, including those at the Rheinsberg National Music Academy in Germany, the European Music Academy in Montepulciano, Italy, the Wuppertal Music Festival in Germany, Seoul National University and Suwon University in South Korea, and the Wuhan Conservatory of Music in China. In 2024, Peppel will be invited to teach at the 9th International Theatre Management Masterclass at the Central Academy of Drama in China.[7]
Since 1992, Peppel has been a member of the German Mutare Ensemble.[8] He served as a jury member for the German National Scholarship Foundation (Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes) from 2005. In 2008, he was a jury member for the Certamen Internacional de Bandas de Música in Valencia, Spain. In 2014, Peppel was a judge for the Marsyas International Flute Competition in Turkey. In 2019, he served on the degree evaluation committee at the Berlin University of the Arts. Since 2021, he has been a jury member for the Jugend Musiziert (German Youth Music Competition). In 2023, Peppel was a jury member for the Hummingbird Music Award at the Chinese Youth Music Competition and held a masterclass as part of the China-Germany Youth Music Exchange Season.
From 1990 to 2004, Peppel taught at the University of Mainz in Germany.[9] From 1999 to 2004, he was also a guest professor at the Universidad de Ciencias y Artes de Chiapas in Mexico. Since 2004, he has been a professor of flute at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln (Cologne University of Music and Dance) and has served as the Director of the Wuppertal campus.[10] Since 2014, he has also been a professor at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Rostock.
In 2021, Peppel officially became a Hong Kong resident through the Quality Migrant Admission Scheme under the Hong Kong Immigration Program.[11]
