Die Wilde Jagd (German for "The Wild Hunt") is a German electronic music project founded in 2015. Since the late 2010s it has functioned as the de facto solo project of Sebastian Lee Philipp, who continues to record and perform under the name. The project is based between Berlin and Düsseldorf.

History

[edit]

Die Wilde Jagd was founded in 2015 by Sebastian Lee Philipp and Düsseldorf-based producer Ralf Beck. The pair had previously collaborated under the name Der Räuber und der Prinz, releasing on Desolat. Following the self-titled debut Die Wilde Jagd (2015) on Bureau B, Beck stepped back as a core member but continued to contribute as co-producer on subsequent albums.[1]

The second album, Uhrwald Orange (2018), received international critical attention. PopMatters described it as “a hypnotic and eerie soundscape that blends kosmische musik traditions with modern electronics.”[2] Similarly, Penny Black Music highlighted its “immersive and cinematic textures.”[3]

Philipp followed with Haut (2020), which continued to expand the project’s dark, experimental palette. That same year he was commissioned by Roadburn Festival to compose the extended work Atem, described by Backseat Mafia as a “dark, occluding drone masterwork” that broadened the scope of the project beyond traditional album form.[4][5]

The fourth studio album, Ophio, was released in 2023. Exposé praised it as “an intricate weave of hypnotic repetition and evolving atmospheres,” positioning Philipp among the leading figures in experimental electronic music.[6] Rolling Stone Deutschland also reviewed the work, calling it “a deeply immersive listening experience.”[7]

In 2024 Philipp premiered Lux Tenera – A Rite To Joy at Roadburn Festival, a large-scale orchestral work commissioned by the festival and performed in collaboration with the Grammy-winning Metropole Orkest, conducted by Simon Dobson. The piece was released as a full album in January 2025. The Letter praised it as “a daring fusion of kosmische tradition with symphonic scope,” noting the significance of the collaboration with the established Dutch orchestra.[8]
