Devon Mion Johanningmeier (born December 27, 2000), known professionally as Devon Again, is an American singer-songwriter from Denver, Colorado. In 2020, she became popular after releasing a number of original song videos and duets that went viral on TikTok. Since then, she has released many singles and two EPs, PEE (2022) and In Order (2025). She has been the opening act for Maude Latour on her Twin Flame tour in 2023 and once for Chappell Roan in 2022.
Early life
[edit]Devon Mion Johanningmeier was born on December 27, 2000, in Denver, Colorado,[1] the only child of recovery admission specialist Jill Johanningmeier. Her father worked as a photographer and shot cars for various magazines.
As a child, both her parents struggled with drug addiction and her maternal uncle died of an overdose. While her father eventually lost his job and became homeless, her mother, Jill, eventually became sober when Johanningmeier was a teenager. During her last two years of high school, she lived with her mother and their cat at Mile High Sober Living in Denver.[2]
Johanningmeier attended middle and high school at the Denver School of the Arts and began releasing music as "Devon J" on Soundcloud as a teenager. After graduating high school in 2019, Johanningmeier moved to Los Angeles, California to attend the Musicians Institute but did not find it the right fit for herself and dropped out after one semester. She then moved into a communal housing program for artists, where she began to further pursue her singing career.[3]
Career
[edit]In late 2019, Johanningmeier began posting short singing and comedy clips of herself onto TikTok. Her first clip to go viral was a comedy video she posted on April 14, 2020, about lesbian hair styling.[4]
On July 23, 2021, Johanningmeier released her first single, "Suburbia", under her current stage name of Devon Again. The same day, the song's first music video was released. In an interview later that year, while she acknowledged the surprising success that the song had attained so far, Johanningmeier still had to work two jobs and was living on food stamps to support herself.[5] As of December 2025, the "Suburbia" music video has more than 226,000 views and the song has more than 7.3 million streams on Spotify.[6]
Since "Suburbia's" release, Johanningmeier has released multiple singles and EPs, totaling 19 songs altogether. For many of these songs like "Suburbia", "Cherry Cola" and "Broke Mine Too", she has released narrative-led music videos as well. Her most viewed video on YouTube is a live performance of her songs "Deep" and "Still Can't Dress Myself" inside of an empty pool. The music video has over 600,000 views on YouTube as of December 2025.[7] She has cited Paramore, Hardy,[8] Erykah Badu, Portishead, James Blake, and Remi Wolf as some of her influences.[9]
Johanningmeier's first EP Pee as Devon Again was released on November 11, 2022, containing six tracks. Her second EP, a five-track release called In Order, came out on November 28, 2025. Her songs have been featured on popular Spotify playlists like New Music Friday, Lorem, Fresh Finds and Pop Sauce.[10] She has opened on tour for acts like Between Friends and Hannah Jadagu. She was a frequent opener in 2023 for Maude Latour on her Twin Flame Tour.
Personal life
[edit]Johanningmeier is queer and frequently depicts lesbian relationships in her songs and music videos.[11]
