The Democratic Students' Federation (DSF) is a student organisation based at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi. It was founded at JNU in 2012–13 and describes itself as an independent left-wing students’ organisation.[1] The group has participated in campus elections, protest campaigns and wider student movements in Delhi, and has been covered in national newspapers as well as in academic research on student politics.[2][3]

History

[edit]

DSF was formed in 2012–13 by student activists at JNU who sought an alternative to existing left organisations.[1] In April 2023 the organisation launched a signature campaign demanding the resumption of JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) elections, which it said gathered over 3,000 signatures.[2] The demand for elections was echoed in wider student coverage across national media.[4]

Ideology and objectives

[edit]

According to its published statements, DSF identifies as left-wing and supports democratic and progressive student politics at JNU.[1] It has aligned with other Left organisations in campus elections.

Activities

[edit]

The federation has organised and joined campaigns on issues such as the restoration of JNUSU elections and education-related protests in Delhi.[5] Reports have also noted its involvement in student demonstrations within JNU, including those over disciplinary fines in 2022.[6]

Elections

[edit]

In the 2025 JNUSU elections, a Left alliance that included DSF won three of the four central panel posts. DSF candidates were reported as winning the posts of Vice-President and General Secretary.[7][8]

Controversies

[edit]

In 2024 the Delhi High Court quashed JNU’s decision to rusticate and evict a PhD scholar, in a case covered as part of wider disputes involving campus organisations.[9] In 2025 JNU again rusticated DSF president Swati Singh for two semesters, citing misconduct in 2023, an action widely reported in the press.[10][11]

Notable people

[edit]
  • Swati Singh – DSF president at JNU, subject of national media reports on university disciplinary actions.[10]
  • Anagha Pradeep – DSF secretary listed in official information.[12]
