Dark Slope Studios is an entertainment company based in Scarborough Ontario, just north of Toronto, Canada. According to Deadline, Dark Slope operates a 75,000 square foot soundstage facility with a 100 foot LED volume wall[1][2] , a motion tracking animation stage and full service production offices and other purpose build soundstages..[3]
The History of Dark Slope Dark Slope was founded by four industry veterans, Raja Khanna[4], Dan Fill[5], CJ Hervey [6] and Ben Unsworth[7] in 2018. Dark Slope began operations focused on location based spatialized computing experiences for theme parks and family entertainment centers. Projects included Scarygirl Mission Maybee[8][9] - based on a Nathan Jurevicius[10] graphic novel and feature film Arkie[11] the Scarygirl property that was adapted into a 8 person free roam virtual reality experience in which participants materialized as avatar characters in a fully animated 3d warehouse scale experience. The activity requires participants to wear VR headsets, backpack computers, motion tracking nodes and haptic gloves and vests. The immersive 20 minute experience allowed participants to transform completely into 3d avatars that were controlled by the participants bodies. The use of voip allowed participants to communicate with each other while haptics allowed participants to 'feel' digital objects that do not exist in the real world. The multi award winning experience was first licensed to Australian location based entertainment group Zero Latency [12], as well as Vertigo games (now Springboard VR), and in 2023 SoReal adapted a version of the experience for locations across China, including Shanghai Disneyland [13]. Other notable Dark Slope LBE projects included a four person simulator ride for Dave & Busters, Transformers: Decepticon Invasion <ref https://arpost.co/2022/08/29/cool-vr-arcade-games-this-summer/></ref> based on the Transformers intellectual property; and Slugterra Slugslinger [14] a four person Hologate activity based on the Slugterra brand. Based on the growing success of the innovative company Dark Slope was identified as one of Deloitte's Technology Fast 50 Innovative companies in Canada [15] and Dark Slope was acknowledge by Deloitte as one of the top Innovative companies in North America prior to the pandemic[16]
2020 Dark Slope began investing r&d resources in the education and simulation arenas. Seeing a growth opportunity, a team was formed which began with XR application development targeting colleges and universities.
Dark Slope was able to secure some investment partners including Telus and Mars. Eventually a separate company, called Lumeto[17] was formed to focus specifically on educational training.
However due to the COVID 19 pandemic [18], Dark Slope's business was decimated, with theme parks and family entertainment centers being shuttered. Dark Slope's investors had lost faith in the entertainment business. Khanna and Fill, effectively bought the company back from the investors and restarted anew as co-founders of the new iteration of Dark Slope. Lumeto was spun off as a separate company under the co-founder leadership team of innovator and futurist Kavi Maharajh [19], former Vice President of IMAX Virtual Reality & Corporate Development Eyal Kleiner [20] . Raja Khanna became CEO of Lumeto, and Ben Unsworth moved over from Dark Slope to Lumeto as the CTO. CFO Cormac Monaghan took on a dual role supporting Lumeto and Dark Slope; Dan Fill took on the role of President of Dark Slope.
Dark Slope pivoted to television production and at home xr games. On the tv production side, the company was focused on the use of the unreal engine for real time rendering and the use of motion tracking for real time animation. Clients included Warner Media, Nickelodeon, NBC Universal[21], TVOntario amongst others. On the games side, Dark Slope focused on experiences primarily for the Meta Quest, Quest 2 and Quest 3 headsets including titles such as The Deep Beyond The Reef, Monster Simulator 3000 [22] and DinoHab [23].[24]
In 2022 Dark Slope expanded production from motion capture animation to live action virtual production projects shot on LED volume stages that they rented from third party studios. In early 2024 Dark Slope secured investment from SideFX software [25] and Relay Ventures [26] which allowed Dark Slope to expand and acquire a large number of LED panels to eventually opened their own state of the art facility. Dark Slope has since gone on to service production for a number of leading productions including Amazon's GEN V , The Boys ; Netflix's BET, CBBC/CBC's Gangnam Project
In 2025 Dark Slope is credited as the soundstage facility and virtual production partner on the Jacob Tierney and Brendan Brady breakthrough hit series : Heated Rivalry for CRAVE & HBO Max. Heated Rivalry is currently the most successful original series ever on CRAVE [27]. Dark Slope also produces award winning commercials in partnership with Publicis; specified shots for films and movies of the week as well as motion capture animated properties for groups such as Little Engine Moving Pictures [28] , TVOntario and NBC Peacock.

Dan Fill from Victoria B.C, is the former Head of Multiplatform for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, co-founder of the Chocolate Liberation Front Production company and former Vice President of Decode Entertainment (now Wildbrain) and multi award winning producer including BAFTA nomination, multiple Australian Academy Awards (AACTAS) and Canadian Gemini Awards. The History of This Location The location of Dark Slope's facilities have a rich history for Canadian production. Purpose build by Zale Magder [29], Formerly known as Magder Studios, then Studio Oasis and Commercial Studios, iconic productions were shot at this soundstage facility at 793 Pharmacy Avenue including: SCTV , A Christmas Story, Stanley & Iris and The Freshman. Celebrities such as Cher, Marlon Brando, Robert De Niro, Nicholas Cage, Jane Fonda, John Candy, Eugene Levy, Martin Short, Dave Thomas, Catherine O'Hara shot productions at this location. [30] On the music front, Queen shot a video at this location, the Rolling Stones recorded here, Ringo Starr was part of a tv series and Gordon Lightfoot used the space for rehearsal. Falling on hard times in the early 2000s, the building was purchased by a pentecostal church known as The First Church . The First Church converted one of the three soundstages into a functioning church that held worship on Sundays including baptisms on site. The First Church leased out the other 2 larger soundstages 'as is' predominantly to commercial shoots, competition cooking shows and lower cost children's shows such as Elliot Moose'. In 2024 Dark Slope became a tenant of the facility, occupying 35,000 square feet and two large soundstages[31]. Dark Slope spent a considerable investment to upgrade and convert one of the 12,000 square foot spaces into a virtual production facility with a state of the art 100 ft LED volume wall, articulating ceiling. Dark Slope added a motion capture animation stage to support real time animation for television series and the third stage, was upgraded with sound buffering to serve as a standing set. In 2025, the church sold the building at 793 Pharmacy and Dark Slope expanded to 75,000 square feet [32]. Dark Slope has since converted the church space back into a soundstage which they appropriately call 'The Church'. The other soundstages 'Magder' paying homage to Zale Magder who founded this production; and Sterling Studio referencing Dark Slope's previous location on Sterling Avenue in The Junction area of Toronto.
