Dariuss (2023)

[edit]

In 2023, Metropolitana made his feature debut with the underground arthouse horror 'meta-cinema nightmarish fuel' film DARIUSS. The film explores the psychological breakdown of a family following the death of a young girl, combining themes of grief, aberrant behaviour, and supernatural intrusion.

Dariuss received polarised reception from numerous critics, reviewers, writers, and journalists. Although the film was screened at very few festivals by the director's own choice, it still managed to attract the attention of many. The film was described by some as “taunting and unapologetic" [1]whilst others considered the film “a disturbing masterpiece.”[2] Critics noted the film’s graphic and controversial imagery, which includes depictions of sexual violence, incest, and necrophilia.[3]

Dariuss was shown to around 200 film students at a University in West London where it received polarising reviews with some describing the film as 'obscene' and 'bizarre' and others labelling the film as 'unprecedented craftsmanship'. [4]

Renowned Canadian-Italian film expert and professor of cinema Donato Totaro of the online film magazine OFF SCREEN praised the film and interviewed Metropolitana in what would be one of his most memorable interviews. [1] [5] DREAD CENTRAL called the film "a distinguishing piece of art" [6] and Travis Bruce from the American Horror Realm Podcast called the film "a disturbing masterpiece".

Award-winning New Zealand horror writer Del Gibson was so impressed by the film that she later decided to write a controversial biography and book on the director's cinema entitled SEARCHING FOR THE PERFECT BUTTERFLY - The visionary cinema of Guerrilla Metropolitana. Which is set to be published in January of 2026. The film achieved cult status in the world of extreme underground cinema, particularly in the United States and later in various parts of Europe, primarily Germany and France, but was also widely criticised in other countries, such as the United Kingdom and Italy, for being bizarre and unconventional.
