Danny Farber (born July 1, 1994) is an American director, actor, producer, and writer known for his bold vertical dramas, award-winning short films, music videos, and versatile acting portfolio. Farber is based in Los Angeles, California, but has worked creatively in national and international markets. His work style has been described as the following: "Whether delivering a tender scene in front of the camera or sculpting satire behind it, he is driven by heart and humor."[1]
Early Life and Education
[edit]Farber was born in Deerfield, a suburb of Chicago, Illinois. He first became involved with the performing arts in the sixth grade, when his friend's father, playwright Tommy Lee Johnston, started a touring company in Deerfield. Farber acted all around the Chicago suburbs in a play about bullying, sparking his love for the art.[2]
When he grew older, Farber studied filmmaking at DePaul University to gain a better understanding of both in front and behind the camera operations. There, he participated in organizations like DCC, DePaul Cinema Collaborative, and DePaul’s Project Bluelight.[2]
Career
[edit]Early Work
[edit]
Early in his career, Farber interned for Black Apple Media in Chicago. He learned about producing and behind the scene operations, eventually landing a role on Chance the Rapper's Sunday Candy music video set.[2]
Farber continued working in Chicago, producing music videos (including We Go High by Chance the Rapper and Used to be Lonely by Whitney), commercials, and features. He also acted locally in roles for Network TV series such as Chicago Fire (Episode #701) and Proven Innocent (Episode #113). These roles, in addition to commercial work with companies like BOSE, secured Farber his SAG card.[3]
In 2019, Farber moved to Los Angeles.
Career in Los Angeles
[edit]After relocating to Los Angeles, Farber continued to direct, act, and produce. He directed several music videos, including those for Chri$tian Gate$'s song Traumatized[4] and artist Verzache's song Feel Like.[5] Around this time, Farber also began acting for organizations like Cracked sketches, Funny or Die, The Onion, and Killer Bites. He also accrued acting roles on commercials with brands such as Chase, Home Depot, and Subway.[1]
In 2021, Farber directed a short drama / comedy about body image called Huge, starring himself and Paloma Nozicka (also the writer of film).[1][6] The short was accepted into over 15 film festivals, winning awards at several of them, including Best Director at the 2021 4th Dimension Int’l Film Festival, Best Short Film at the 2021 Rotterdam International Film Festival, and Best Narrative International Short at the 2021 London Indie Short Festival.[1][7]
In 2023, Farber collaborated with producer Amy Poehler and actress Anjelika Washington to make the dark comedy, Thoughts and Prayers.[8][9] Farber wrote, directed, and starred in the film. He described his mindset behind the subject (which deals with school shootings) as, "Approaching it satirically, with heavy satire and dark comedy seemed like the best packaging with material that is so heavy and serious."[10][11] The film won awards such as Best of Fest at the 2024 We Make Movies International Film Festival[12] and Best Dark Comedy at the 2024 Los Angeles Film Awards.[13]
Farber is also a musical artist. He released his first EP, hope to see you there, a collection of upbeat folk songs, in 2025.[14][15]
Vertical Directing
[edit]Since 2023, Farber has worked with international markets making vertical features in a 9x16 format.[10] Working with companies like ReelShort, DramaPops, GoodShort, DramaBox, and DreameShort, Farber has directed over 15 vertical productions.[16][17] Some of Farber's most popular vertical dramas include GoodShort's A Mistaken Surrogate for the Ruthless Billionaire,[18] DramaBox's Cheer Up Baby![19] and GoodShort's Smile My Cheating Husband You're on Camera.[20]
These micro-dramas are part of a growing phenomenon originating from China.[21] According to Farber, "“You have to immediately engage the audience within the first five seconds, and within each 90 seconds have a cliffhanger.” The productions themselves typically involve only 7 - 12 days to shoot 50 - 80 episodes.[22]
