Daniel De Swardt is a rugby union player currently playing for Ipswich Grammar School and the Queensland Reds at under 15 level.
Daniel was born in Naperville, Illinois, USA in March 2010 to parents of South African heritage. He currently has dual United States and New Zealand citizenship.
His great-grandfather, GJ De Swardt, was a hard-nosed flank and lock forward for the Natal Sharks playing in the Currie Cup in the late 1940s.
Early Rugby Career + Club Rugby
Daniel learned his rugby from age 5 at Paremata-Plimmerton Rugby Club. The same club that had New Zealand greats such as Christian Cullen and Ken Gray on it's books in past years..[1] He played for 8 years at the club in Porirua, New Zealand before his family relocated to Queensland in Australia.
While in New Zealand, Daniel also played First XV at Year 7/8 level for Scots College in Wellington.
In September 2025 Daniel was man of the match in the final playing fullback as the Ipswich Rangers Rugby Club won the Brisbane Junior Rugby Union (BJRU) U15 Div II final against GPS rugby club 31-19.
High School Rugby
Daniel plays his high school rugby for Ipswich Grammar School, which participates in the prestigious GPS competition in South-East Queensland. Joining IGS in 2022, he is an accomplished backline player, and primary goal kicker, comfortable in every position from 10-15. He has been awarded backline player of the year from 2022 - 2025, and overall player of the year for his age-group in 2023. His currently favoured positions are outside centre and fullback.
Queensland Reds Junior Representative Rugby
In 2024 Daniel participated in the U14 Queensland Reds Emerging Reds Cup[2]. At the conclusion of this tournament, he was named in one of the two high performance development teams which competed in a final development match[3]
In 2025 he was named in the Queensland Reds U15 training squad. He made his on-field debut on the right-wing in a 39-26 win over the NSW Waratahs in Sydney on 11 October 2025, successfully kicking a sideline conversion soon after entering play.[4][5]
Other Sporting Codes
Daniel is an established Track + Field athlete at Ipswich Grammar School specializing in the 100m, 200m, sprint hurdles, and shot-put, under the watchful eye of coaches Jon Auguste (throws) and Di Sheppard (sprints/hurdles), and in the senior squad with the sensational Gout Gout. Daniel represented Queensland at the 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025 Australian National Athletics Championships and/or Australian All Schools National Championships. He also captained the Ipswich Grammar Junior T&F team to the national title in the Chemist Warehouse Australian Athletics Schools Challenge in December 2024.[6]
