Dan Mora

(born June 5, 1987) is a Costa Rican comic book artist. He has contributed work for all major comic book companies, particularly DC Comics in titles such as Batman/Superman: World's Finest, Detective Comics, and Shazam!, and plenty of variant covers for Marvel Comics.
Early life
[edit]Dan Mora was born on June 5, 1987, in San José, Costa Rica. Growing up, he immersed himself in various artistic influences, particularly superhero comics such as Spider-Man and Batman and the works of Bruce Timm. Mora pursued his passion academically, studying Plastic Arts at the University of Costa Rica.
Career
[edit]BOOM! Studios
[edit]Dan Mora's professional career began with BOOM! Studios, where he has been an artist on several notable series.
In 2014, Mora made his debut with 'Hexed', a fantasy-horror series that started his collaboration with BOOM! Studios.
His breakthrough came with Klaus (2015–2016), a collaboration with writer Grant Morrison. This series reimagined the origin of Santa Claus, presenting a darker and more adventurous narrative. Mora's artwork earned critical acclaim and leading to multiple sequels. The success of *Klaus* solidified Mora's reputation in the comic industry.
Mora also worked Saban's Go Go Power Rangers (2017–2018), where he served as the main series artist and was accepted by both new and longtime fans of the franchise. He also contributed to the milestone Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #100 issue in 2022, celebrating the series' legacy. In 2019, Mora teamed up with writer Kieron Gillen on 'Once & Future', a series that explores Arthurian legends in a modern setting. [1]
Beyond interior art, Mora has created variant covers for several BOOM! Studios titles, including 'BRZRKR #1' (2021), a series co-created by Keanu Reeves, and Folklords #1 (2019).[2]
Marvel Comics
[edit]Dan Mora has worked heavily with Marvel Comics, primarily as a cover artist.
In 2020, Mora provided variant covers for the limited series Falcon & Winter Soldier, which follows the adventures of Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes.[3] In 2021, Mora was featured in the King in Black: Black Knight one-shot, part of the larger King in Black event.[4]
Mora continued to demonstrate in his work on other major titles, including:
- Daredevil (2015) - Contributed variant covers that showcased his darker, grittier style.[5]
- Spirits of Vengeance (2017) - Created covers featuring supernatural heroes such as Ghost Rider and Blade.[6]
- All-New Wolverine (2015–2018) - Designed cover art for various issues featuring Laura Kinney as Wolverine.[7]
- Thor vs. Hulk: Champions of the Universe (2017) - Illustrated variant covers emphasizing action-packed battle sequences.[8]
- X-Men: Gold (2017–2018) - Created striking cover designs for the X-Men title during its run.[9]

DC Comics
[edit]Dan Mora has made significant contributions to DC Comics, establishing himself as a prominent artist within the publisher's roster.
In 2021, Mora began his work on Detective Comics.[11] Following this, Mora collaborated with writer Mark Waid on Batman/Superman: World's Finest, which debuted in 2022.[12] In 2023, Mora expanded into the ongoing Shazam! series.[13]

[edit]Dan Mora’s interpretation of Batman received recognition when McFarlane Toys Archived 2024-12-08 at the Wayback Machine created a 1:6 scale DC Direct resin statue based on his artwork. The collectible, announced in May 2024, honors the popularity and impact of Mora’s vision for the character.[18]
Style and influences
[edit]Mora's art is characterized by clean linework, expressive character designs, and fluid action sequences. He often combines traditional pencil sketches with digital coloring techniques to enhance the depth and dynamism of his illustrations. His influences include: Bruce Timm, Mike Mignola, Paul Pope, These artists influenced his use of strong silhouettes and bold compositions.
