Doors (stylized in all caps) is a first-person[1] roguelite horror escape room game developed by indie developers LSPLASH and RediblesQW on the Roblox platform. It is inspired by other Roblox experiences such as Rooms and Spooky's Jumpscare Mansion.[citation needed]

Gameplay

[edit]

The player's goal is to open a specific number of doors to reach the end of each floor. While progressing, the player encounters various hostile monsters called entities. The game is structured into four main floors, each with subfloors.

The Hotel

[edit]

The Hotel is the first floor. As the name implies, it is set in an old, abandoned hotel. The player must progress through 100 rooms to complete the Hotel and advance to the next area, the Mines. The Hotel features 11 hostile entities (Dupe, Screech, Rush, Ambush, Halt, Figure, Seek, Void, Eyes, Hide, and Snare), three helpful entities (Guiding Light, Glitch, and Jeff), and two miscellaneous entities (El Goblino and Bob). Two entities, Figure and Seek, have scripted spawns at specific points. Seek appears twice: once before the Library and again after it, emerging from the ground in a hallway. Figure appears in room 50 (the Library) and room 100 (the Electrical Room). In the Library, the player must collect books with shapes and associated numbers, then use a code to unlock the door while avoiding detection by Figure. In the Electrical Room, the player must collect breaker switches and complete a puzzle to escape while being chased by Figure. After completing the puzzle, the player enters an elevator to proceed to the Mines.

The Mines

[edit]

After the elevator falls, the player arrives in the Mines. This section is currently unfinished and under development.

Subfloors

[edit]

The game features special side-areas known as subfloors. They can be found in special areas throughout main floors, and can be entered with special items specific to the entrance (with the exception to the Backdoors, which can only be entered through the lobby). The Rooms is a long subfloor consisting of a thousand rooms, but it is fairly empty compared to other floors. The Outdoors is a subfloor featuring multiple unique entities, mechanics, and bosses.

History

[edit]

Doors was released on August 10, 2022, following a trailer.[2] In November 2022, the game reached 1 billion visits.[3] The Hotel+ update, which revamped the hotel, was released on January 29, 2023.[‡ 1][4] The update included a nod to Rooms, featuring a revamped secret level accessible from the Hotel.[5] On August 26, 2023, modifiers were added, allowing players to change game parameters after completion, affecting the number of knobs earned.[‡ 2] A second floor, "The Mines", was released on August 30, 2024.[6] The game also participated in the first edition of The Hunt, adding a new sub-floor called "The Backdoor".[7] On December 21, 2024, the Content Update released, adding improvements such as new bookshelf models and entities.

Reception

[edit]

Whitney Meers of PCGamesN described the horror element as "too much for YouTubers to handle".[8] Carlos Mestre of TheGamer described the game as a "spine-chilling adventure" set in a "Victorian era-esque" hotel.[9]

Collaborations

[edit]

The game collaborated with Makeship to release plushies of various entities.[‡ 3][‡ 4][‡ 2] A collaboration with the Roblox game Tower Heroes featured the entity El Goblino as a limited-time character.[10]
