Corey La Rue (born August 23, 1987), formerly known as Corey Ruecker, is an American painter, poet, and activist based in Los Angeles.[1]
La Rue works primarily with large-scale abstract paintings that incorporate hand-ground natural pigments and soil collected from culturally significant locations.[2]
Education
[edit]La Rue received a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from the University of California, Davis in 2013 and an MFA in painting (with distinction) from Boston University in 2016.[1] While at Boston University he was the recipient of several departmental prizes and scholarships.[1]
In 2021 he earned a Master of Professional Studies from the Maryland Institute College of Art.[1]
Publishing and activism
[edit]While an undergraduate at UC Davis, La Rue co-founded Absurd Publications, a small-press zine and chapbook project. In 2012 the collective appeared on Capital Public Radio's Insight program to discuss independent publishing.[3]
La Rue participated in the 2011 Occupy movement protests at UC Davis against tuition increases; a photograph of him holding a protest sign appeared in The Davis Enterprise.[4]
He also worked as an instructor and intern at Taller Arte del Nuevo Amanecer[5] (TANA) in Woodland, California, under artists Malaquías Montoya and Carlos Jackson[6].[7][8]
2023 motorcycle accident and recovery
[edit]On June 10, 2023, La Rue was in a near-fatal motorcycle accident in Glendale, California. He was in a coma for three days and suffered multiple life-threatening injuries, including a fractured neck, fractured spine in two places, shattered left wrist, severe nerve damage that paralyzed his dominant right hand, fractured ribs, bruised lungs, and a fractured hip and knee.[1][9]
Doctors initially told him he might never paint again. While still in recovery at Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital, he began relearning to draw and paint with his non-dominant left hand. Within months he returned to creating large-scale works with his left hand as strength gradually returned, an experience he credits with deepening the resilience and rebirth themes in his art.[1][9]
Career
[edit]La Rue's work has been exhibited in the United States and internationally. Notable presentations include the solo exhibition The Flowers Remember at Smoke the Moon gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico (May 17 – June 23, 2024), which featured paintings created with his non-dominant hand after the 2023 accident.[10] One work from the exhibition, For Eloise (2024), was reviewed in The Santa Fe New Mexican.[11]
His work is available through the online platform Artsy (under the name Corey Ruecker) and has been featured on the David Zwirner Platform.[12][13]
In 2024 he gave a studio visit and lecture hosted by the Fellows of Contemporary Art[14] and David Zwirner in Los Angeles.[13] In 2025 he served as a visiting artist at Boston University.[1]
His writing has appeared or is forthcoming in Angel City Review and Bold Journey Magazine.[1]
