Claudio Cecchetti (born 1976 in Florence, Italy) is an Italian painter, illustrator, and art educator based in New York. His work explores themes such as memory, absence, and human presence through still lifes and figurative studies, often rendered in monochrome. His work has been published in the international magazine Harper's Magazine. He has exhibited nationally and internationally, including at the Museo Casa Buonarroti in Florence, the Venice Biennale, Art Basel Miami, and Sotheby’s New York, alongside artists such as Eric Fischl, Jenny Saville, and Michelangelo Pistoletto.
Early life and education
[edit]Cecchetti was born in Florence in 1976. Before dedicating himself to the visual arts, he studied psychology and veterinary medicine. He attended the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze, graduating summa cum laude in painting in 2008. He also took courses at the Scuola Internazionale di Comics in Florence (2003), earning a diploma in storytelling, comics, and illustration. In 2000, he undertook intensive watercolor studies at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London. In 2023, Cecchetti earned a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Painting from the New York Academy of Art, where he was subsequently awarded the prestigious Chubb Fellowship[1] 2024.
Art
[edit]Cecchetti’s artistic practice spans painting, drawing, fresco, and illustration. His works often depict compositions of everyday objects, particularly dining tables, as metaphors for presence and absence. He has cited a personal memory of the last meal prepared by his mother as a key source of inspiration for this series. His monochrome works evoke associations with Daniel Spoerri’s Eat Art installations, though rendered with austere sobriety. In recent years, Cecchetti has shown interest in integrating color into his practice, moving from representing emptiness toward fullness and vitality
