City University Qatar (CUQ), originally founded as City University College (CUC), is a private higher education institution in Qatar that operates in partnership with Ulster University in the United Kingdom. Licensed by the Qatar Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MoEHE), CUQ offers UK‑accredited undergraduate and postgraduate programmes tailored to meet future workforce needs of Qatar and the region. City University Qatar is owned and managed by Artan Holding, a 100% Qatari-owned holding company, operating under the Artan Consulting and Educational Services (ACES) cluster, which also owns Doha British School and Qatar Skills Training Centre. The President of City University Qatar is Professor Faris G. Faris, PhD.

History

Founding and Early Years

CUC was established in 2018 and, in June 2019, formalised an affiliate partnership with Ulster University to deliver UK‑franchised programmes in Business, Management, Marketing, and International Business, commencing in September 2019.[1]

First Graduating Cohort

On 31 October 2020, CUC celebrated its first cohort of BTEC Higher National Diploma (HND) graduates in Business at the Doha British School. Many of these students later continued to complete their degrees through the Ulster University partnership.[2]

Inauguration of New Campus (2022)

On 24 September 2022, CUC hosted a combined inauguration and graduation ceremony at its new campus in West Bay, Doha. The event featured speeches by the UK Ambassador to Qatar, Jon Wilks CMG, and Dr Khalid Al-Ali of the MoEHE.[3]

Groundbreaking of Lusail Campus

In late 2022, CUQ held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new campus in Lusail, designed with modern academic and recreational facilities, and officially opened on 28th September, 2024.[4]

Transition to University Status

In 2024, the MoEHE officially recognised City University College as a full-fledged university, prompting its rebranding as City University Qatar and confirming its relocation to Lusail.

Vocational Pathways and Undergraduate Degrees

CUQ, in conjunction with Ulster University, offers BTEC HNDs in Business and Computing, as well as UK-accredited undergraduate degrees. Programmes include BSc (Hons) in Architecture, Game Design & Development, Artificial Intelligence, Biomedical and Electronic Engineering, Law (LLB), and more.[4]

Postgraduate Offerings

Postgraduate programmes include an MBA, an MBA (Women in Leadership), Master of Education Management, MSc in Artificial Intelligence, MSc in Marketing, and LLM with Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR).

Integrated Academic‑Vocational Model

The institution employs a "Learn and Earn" model that integrates academic learning with professional experience to enhance employability.[5]

CUQ's new campus is located in Lusail, a smart city north of Doha. Facilities include:

Ulster University is CUQ’s founding academic partner, providing oversight, curriculum, and accreditation.[1]

Gulf Warehousing Company (GWC)

In 2023, CUQ signed an MoU with GWC to collaborate on training, research, and workforce upskilling.[6]

NAMA Social Development Center

In 2025, CUQ signed a three-year MoU with NAMA, part of Qatar Foundation, to offer training, internships, workshops, and scholarships for youth empowerment.[7]

In 2023, CUQ hosted a TEDx event under the theme Provocations of Change, highlighting innovation and future-oriented thinking.[8]

Graduation Ceremonies

Graduation ceremonies have taken place annually, with students, faculty, families, and community stakeholders attending.[3]

TEDxCUCUlsterUniversity

In 2026, CUQ is hosting another TEDx event under the theme Techadum - Advancement through Technology, with discussion centred around the future of advancement around technology and the profound effects it will have on Qatar's future.
