Prof. Chuah Joon Huang (Chinese: 蔡润煌) is a Malaysian academic, engineer, and university administrator. He is the current President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Southern University College (Southern UC) in Johor Bahru, Malaysia.[1] Chuah is known for his contributions to integrated circuit design, artificial intelligence (AI), computer vision, and higher education leadership in Malaysia and the ASEAN region.

Early life and education

Chuah obtained a Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) with First Class Honours from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). He then earned a Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) from the National University of Singapore (NUS), followed by a Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in Technology Policy and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) at the University of Cambridge.[2]

Academic and research work

Chuah began his academic career at the University of Malaya, where he served as an Associate Professor in Electrical Engineering and directed the VLSI and Image Processing Research Group.[3] His research covers computer vision, image processing, and very-large-scale integration (VLSI) design, producing applications in AI, robotics, and digital signal processing.

Before academia, Chuah worked in the semiconductor industry, including at Intel Corporation as an Integrated Circuit Design Engineer and at Freescale Semiconductor (formerly Motorola, SPS) as Senior Product Development Engineer.

Leadership in higher education

On 1 March 2023, Chuah was appointed President and CEO of Southern University College.[4] In September 2024, he was additionally appointed Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology (FEIT). Under his leadership, Southern UC has:
