Christodoulos Gkaltemis is a Greek painter and engraver, born in Ioannina, Epirus, Greece. He has served as Associate Professor in the Department of Plastic Arts and Art Sciences at the University of Ioannina.[1] He has been awarded the First Prize in the "Class of Letters and Fine Arts" by the Academy of Athens for his overall contribution to visual arts.[2][3][4]

Biography

[edit]

Christodoulos Gkaltemis was born in Kostaniani, Ioannina, in 1953. During his years at secondary school, he began studying painting with compatriot painter Georgios Kazakos. Later, he enrolled at the Athens School of Fine Arts, where he first studied in the engraving studio of Kostas Grammatopoulos,[5] from which he graduated with the "Award for Best Works Created" . At the same time, he attended Giannis Papadakis' "Training workshop on artistic typography and book art", as well as theoretical courses taught by Pandelis Prevelakis, Pavlos Milonas, Antonios Danassis-Afentakis and Marina Lambraki-Plaka.[6] In 1986, he received a three-year scholarship from the State Scholarships Foundation for postgraduate studies in engraving. In 2008, he received the First Prize in the "Class of Letters and Fine Arts" by the Academy of Athens. [citation needed]

Work

[edit]

In his works he depicts scenes from neighborhoods of Athens of the past, including inhabited and uninhabited neoclassical houses, as well as traditional provincial houses.[7] According to the excerpt of the report by the Secretary General of the Academy of Athens, Mr. Nikolaos Matsaniotis, which was read on 30 December 2008 during the ceremonial session of the award to Christodoulos Gkaltemis[7], it was stated among other things that[8]: "His subject matter encompasses nature and especially the countryside, with the diffusion of light as a key element. All his works, both paintings and engravings, are permeated by a lucid atmosphere. Through both forms of expression, he conveys his inner pulse to the viewer with a superficial tranquility. He is an artist who does not lead the viewer to the surface but conceals his contemplation and sensitivity. His remarkable drawing ability is particularly evident in his engraving work because of the simplicity of the medium, since color is rare in it."

Haris Kampouridis, art critic and semiologist, member of the Academia Europaea, emphasizes, among other things, about the artist's work : "Obvious and appealing from one point of view, hidden and inaccessible from another, the values of Christodoulos Gkaltemis' art already constitute a robust, complete body of work, with ideological conviction and technical skills that place him alongside important peers, whose work he worthily extends. The visual images that the artist presents to our gaze are clearly recognizable: old houses from Epirus, the shores of lakes in Ioannina or Missolonghi, as well as autonomous structural elements or ornaments. However, at the same time, while these subjects satisfy vision with the precision of their description, they also provoke reflection, creating a momentary suspension, since the realism is not as plausible as one might initially think. A subtle dialogue of light and shadow generates successive facets in the shaping of form, thereby multiplying meanings."[citation needed]

Mr. Nikos Vatopoulos, journalist and writer, in his review of Gkaltemis' latest exhibition, writes for the Greek newspaper Kathimerini, among other things[9]: "Surrounded by the fruits and flowers of Christodoulos Gkaltemis, one feels part of a long journey through time. These are landscapes and reflections of the mind and gestures of a certain aesthetic origin. Christodoulos Gkaltemis' exhibition at the Argo Gallery is a confirmation of the solid painting and the mastery of drawing of a creator who is constantly opening up paths to new emotion. His new work consists of still lifes. Not random compositions, but crystallizations with intense symbolism. Christodoulos Gkaltemis, a direct and inventive man, with his acquired freedom through time, excavates the landscape of memory, of ancestral origins, of the journey toward maturity, and brings forth the gifts of this path as trophies."[citation needed]

Works by Gkaltemis are found in the Hellenic Parliament, the Cultural Foundation of the National Bank (Greece), Ergobank (merged into Eurobank in 2000), the European Investment Bank, the Vorres Museum, the Averoff Gallery in Metsovo, the Town Hall of Ioannina, the Engraving Gallery founded by Kostas Malamos in Zitsa and the Hambis Printmaking Museum. They are also found in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Greece), in the Hyatt Regency Hotel of Thessaloniki and the King George Hotel of Athens, as well as in banks, public organizations, and in numerous private collections in Greece, Cyprus, the United States, Canada, England, Belgium, France, and Germany.[10]
