Cho Su-Hwang, FRAS, FRSA, (Korean: 조수황; born September 19, 1996) is a South Korean traditional musician and pansori vocalist. He is a Certified Successor (Transmitter) of National Intangible Cultural Heritage Pansori Chunhyangga and a full-time member of the National Changgeuk Company of Korea. In 2025, he was elected a Fellow of both the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA) and the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland (FRAS). He has gained international recognition as one of the foremost representatives of Korean traditional music and was officially acknowledged by Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Yu In-chon as a “national representative artist.”[1]
In June 2022, Su-Hwang Cho performed at the Sofia Music Weeks International Festival in Bulgaria. He performed with Anatoli Krastev, a distinguished Bulgarian cellist and vice-rector of the Pancho Vladigerov National Academy of Music in Sofia. Established in 1970, the Sofia Music Weeks is one of Eastern Europe’s leading classical music festivals, presenting renowned artists from around the world. This performance, following UNESCO’s 2003 proclamation of pansori as a “Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity” and its subsequent inscription on the Representative List, was recognised as a symbolic event that shared and extended pansori’s presence on the international stage, reaffirming its equal standing within the global musical discourse.[2][3]
Building on this international recognition, in January 2024 Cho was invited to the President’s New Year’s Reception for Cultural and Artistic Leaders, widely regarded as the nation’s most prestigious assembly of artists. He participated in the event as a leading representative of Korean traditional music, his presence affirming his standing alongside the country’s most eminent figures in literature, art, film, and performance.[4]
Early life and education
[edit]Cho was born in Seoul in 1996. At the age of eleven, he was discovered by Grandmaster Shin Young-hee, holder of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage, and began intensive training in pansori. He subsequently studied with leading masters including Kim Il-gu, Ahn Sook-sun, Lee Nan-cho, Jeong Hoi-seok, and Kim Geum-mi, inheriting the full lineage of the five canonical pansori repertoires: Chunhyangga, Sugungga, Simcheongga, Jeokbyeokga, and Heungboga.
He graduated from the National Gugak Middle School, the National Gugak High School, and earned a B.A. in Korean Music at Seoul National University.[5]
Career
[edit]In November 2021, Cho held his solo recital Nature’s Comfort: Four Seasons with Su-Hwang Cho at the Byeoloreum Theater of the National Theater of Korea, presenting a program ranging from short songs to folk songs and pansori, combined with immersive video art.[6]
He joined the National Busan Gugak Center as a full-time member in 2022, and in 2023 became a full-time member of the National Changgeuk Company, resident at the National Theater of Korea.[7]
