Chew Valley Lake Sailing Club (CVLSC) is a dinghy sailing club on Chew Valley Lake near Chew Stoke, Somerset, England.[2][3] The club is an RYA Recognised Training Centre and an RYA Sailability Centre.[4][2]
History
[edit]The club was founded in 1967 and marked its golden anniversary in 2017.[1] Accounts of the club’s early years identify founder members including Peter Cheek and David Macklin.[5] Chew Valley Lake itself was created by Bristol Water in the 1950s (opened 1956) as a reservoir; today, sailing on the lake is permitted only via CVLSC under Bristol Water’s arrangements.[3]
Activities and training
[edit]CVLSC runs club racing (typically on Wednesday evenings and Sundays) and offers RYA dinghy and powerboat training to members.[6][4] The club’s published lake plan describes a sailable area of approximately 3 km, with seasonal restrictions agreed with the fishery operator.[7]
Events hosted
[edit]CVLSC regularly hosts open meetings and class championships, including:
- Noble Marine UKLA Masters ILCA 6 & 7 Inland Championships (16–17 April 2022).[8][9][10]
- Scorpion Inland Championship (June 2025).[11]
- Seafly National Championship (June 2025).[12]
- RS100 Inland Championship (October 2022).[13]
Earlier notable club events include an RYA “Torch Relay Race” evening series special in May 2012.[14]
Sailability
[edit]The club is listed by the RYA as a Sailability Centre and is used by the local charity Chew Lake Association of Disabled Sailors (CLADS).[2][15]
Notable sailors
[edit]- Keith Wilkins – Laser European champion (1976) and multi–time Laser/ILCA Masters world champion; listed as a former member of CVLSC’s Laser fleet.[16]
- Chris Gowers – Olympic sailing coach; listed among former members of the CVLSC Laser fleet.[16]
Organisation
[edit]The club is operated by Chew Valley Lake Sailing Club Limited (company no. 10518206), a private company limited by guarantee, incorporated on 9 December 2016.[17]
