The Chapel of Our Lady of Guidance (Portuguese: Capela de Nossa Senhora da Guia), officially called Capela de Nossa Senhora da Guia e Sua Anexa Senhor da Agonia is an 18th-century Portuguese baroque Catholic chapel located at the Campo da Feira in Guimarães, Portugal.
History
[edit]
The earliest known reference to the chapel dates from 1726, when it was described as a modest structure built by the local residents. In 1751, the statutes of the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Guidance (Irmandade de Nossa Senhora da Guia) were formally established. During the final quarter of the 18th century, following authorization to demolish the Torre dos Cães, a medieval defensive tower on which the original chapel had stood, the Brotherhood resolved to build a new and official chapel on the same site, where it remains to this day.[2]
The construction of the chapel commenced in the final quarter of the 18th century and was concluded in 1793, the year in which the main chapel was blessed and the building opened to the public for worship that August. In 1852 the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Guidance decided to redesign the chapel, completing its façade at the point where the original works had stopped. In 1856, fine stone quoins, a cornice, and a bellcote were added to the front façade, giving the building its present appearance.[2]
In 1990, the chapel’s roof was replaced. In 2000, the nave flooring was renewed, and both the interior and exterior were repainted. In September and October of 2025, a new roof replacement was carried out, improving and replacing the works made in 2013 following the partial collapse of the roof.[3]
