Chandra Prasad Giri (born May 13, 1961) is a Nepalese American Author, Editor, and Scientist currently based in the United States. He is the first author of the paper entitled "Status and distribution of mangrove forests of the world using earth observation satellite data"[1], published in 2011 which has garnered more than 4,000 citations [2]. He is also the author of seven books, more than 125 peer-reviewed publications and several newspaper articles[3][4][5]. Giri's research focuses on the use of remote sensing and geographic information system (GIS) for the characterization, mapping and monitoring of land use/land cover and mangrove forest ranging from local to global scales. Currently, Giri is Senior Science Advisor of the Office of Research and Development (ORD), United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Adjunct Professor at Duke University in North Carolina. In the past he has worked for United States Geological Survey, South Dakota State University, Columbia University, United Nations Environment Programme, Asian Institute of Technology, and the Ministry of Forestry and Environment of Nepal Government.
Early Life and education
[edit]Giri was born in Chimchima, a small village in khotang district of eastern Nepal. [6]. He completed his early education in Khotang and Jhapa, Nepal and earned degrees from Trubhwan University, also from Nepal[7]. He later received his M. Sc.(1993) and Ph.D. (1997) in Remote Sensing and GIS from the Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Thailand[8]
Research
[edit]Giri's recent research focuses on the mapping and monitoring of mangrove forests worldwide, utilizing remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS)[9]. By analyzing satellite imagery and geospatial data, he aims to create detailed maps that reflect the current state of these vital ecosystems, tracking changes in mangrove coverage and assessing their health over time[10].
Giri is also a guest editor in various remote sensing journals including Remote Sensing Volume I[11], Volume II[12], Volume III[13] & Volume IV[14]. He is also an associate editor of journal Remote Sensing[15].
International Involvement
[edit]Giri has involved in a number of international scientific working groups such as the Group on Earth Observation land cover and global mangrove monitoring working group,[16], International Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing working group on global land cover [17], ad the International Blue Carbon Scientific Working Group[18].
Research Highlight
[edit]Giri and co-authors produced a consistant, most compreheresolution mangrove forest map and database of the world using Landsat satellite data at 30 meters spatial resolution[1][19].[20] [21]
His research produced important data and information on the distribution and dynamics of mangrove forests in different parts of world[22]
His research seminal paper[1] produced the global map shown below and has become the most cited paper annually from 2014 to 2021 in the field of 'remote sensing in mangroves' [23]

The Global mangrove forests database is available freely from a number of web-sites[25] [26][27]
